NC/SC beaches

My sister and BIL, myself and DH are all driving to visit my brother and SIL this June at their house in Pinehurst NC. We are going to stay at their house for a few days and visit and then hopefully we will all 6 drive to  abeach somewhere for a few additional days. The easy answer is always Myrtle Beach, but I am just not a fan of Myrtle Beach. I think it's a dirty beach and basically just a tourist trap. So... recommend a beach you have been to in NC/SC. Like I said, he's in Pinehurst NC so it's going to be a little bit of a drive to get to any beach so I am open to suggestions. I remember a post about Charleston and that is on the short list. I have asked my brother to get me some information on what we can do and where we can go when we vist but he's a slacker and he won't get me the information until the day before we leave and I am a planner :)

TIA

  • DH's family goes to Topsail Beach, NC a lot. We went over the summer and it was awesome! It was quiet, peaceful and really pretty. It was secluded though, so there wasn't a lot to do. Wrightsville and Wilmington weren't too far of a drive.

I have no idea how close any of this is to where you're going to be though either!

  • Holden beach and Wrightsville Beach in NC are really nice.  They are near Wilmington. Holden is about 30 mins from there and Wrightsville is abt 5 The outer banks is always an option as well.    My parents have land in Southport which is nice but kinda secluded.  I use to live in NC so I'm a huge fan!  Good luck and I hope you can find something :)

Ditto Topsail. I love it because it's so much less commercialized than other beaches, a little more undiscovered, KWIM?

  • I went to Holden Beach twice in high school/college.  DH and I went to Ocean Isle Beach last summer and spent almost 2 weeks there.  We'll probably go back to OIB this summer too- we really liked it there!  I think I liked OIB better than HB just because I felt like the restaurants, etc... were better.  These beaches neighbor each other, and are about 45 minutes from Myrtle.  OIB is just north of Calabash which has a lot to offer in terms of semi-touristy stuff too.

FWIW, I really love NC beaches because they aren't as touristy.

  • This year we are going to Folly Beach, for the third time.  It's outside of Charleston.  We love it there because it's not overly populated and crowded like Myrtle Beach.  It's a cute little town.  We also like that it's so close to Charleston and we'll probably head into the city a few times during our week stay.

  • My whole extended family goes to Emerald Isle, NC every year for the past 30 years. It's at the very bottom of the Outer Banks, and isn't built up as much as some other of the outer banks islands. There are lots of cute towns around and things to do. It's mostly rental homes with a few hotels/condos to stay at/rent. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • I used to live in NC.  I always enjoyed the town of Wilmington and close-by Wrightsville beach.  If I remember correctly, the drive is under 2 hours from Pinehurst.  Wrightsville is a very nice beach, much different from Myrtle. Topsail Beach is just north and Carolina Beach is just south of Wrightsville.  They are a little more affordable areas, but I prefer Wrightsville.  Wilmington is only a few miles away on the Cape Fear River.  It has some little shops, restaurants, and bars that are nice to go to.  Also, you can tour the USS NC battleship or take a boat cruise up the river.  It's a nice option if you don't want to have a beach day.  Have fun!

  • My DH and I went to Isle of Palms last year in Charleston.  It was very populated but not dirty and it was beautiful!

Ocean Isle is beautiful! My uncle's extended family has gone every year for 30+ years. Every so often our side of the family goes, too. It's a really gorgeous beach. We're trying to this year, but we have a wedding up in Boston the weekend before so I'm afraid it's not going to work out.
