BR: *really* dumb question about flu shots

My work schedules seasonal flu shots for any employees who want to get one, and I want to sign up for this round. The jab date is March 18, so about a month from now. I know flu shots are fine to have during pregnancy (I did the H1N1 last year), but are there any restrictions on how far along you can or can't be? I'll be 33.5 weeks at the time. That's OK, right?

I could call my doc and ask, but I kind of hate to have to play phone tag with him for such a simple question lol.

  • as far as i know, it's fine.  let's see... i think i got mine in mid Oct as soon as it was available here (and i was 40 wks on 11/11/09) and i remember my ob offering it to me even after i had gotten it.  (i just remember worrying that i would give birth before i had a chance to get it so little A would have no immunity from it when she was born.)

This is something I'm a little worried about as well. If the boys are born at, say, 36 weeks, is that long enough for them to get any benefits from the immunization?

  • I can't imagine that it would be a problem.  MH (an MD) doesn't see a problem with it, either, though he's not an OB, just family practice, so he's not an expert on this sort of thing.

However, I thought my OB told be that the LO will not have any immunity, only me.  Did I misunderstand this.....is this wrong?

  • the babies get a little immunity from it, not a lot. but it takes about 1-2 wks and will last about 3 mos according to MH.  it's more so that you can ensure that you don't get it yourself, as it could be bad for the babies if you came down w/it while carrying them en utero.

ditto!  I got the h1n1 @ 38 wks & flu @39 wks.  They said it takes 5-7 days for baby to get the effects

    Cool. Yes

@ lelekay - like Jaime said, the baby gets a little of the immunity (it is primarily for the mom, not the baby)...not a ton, but they do get a bit, and I figure every little bit helps!

  • The baby also gets the benefits from breastmilk. I didn't get my flu shot until my 6-week post-partum check-up.

Oh is it still effective then? I wasn't sure if it was one of the things that came through or not. Good to know!
