This story just rips my heart out
(Warning: Very sensitive, heartwrenching subject, euthansia on people)

I've been in level 9 pain (once you hit 10 you usually pass out) when I woke up from surgery with no pain meds. I was begging and crying for someone to knock me unconcious it was so bad. If I was terminally ill and going to be in horrible pain for the rest of my day . . . I would pray my husband who do the same for me.
Re: This story just rips my heart out
I couldn't, I wouldn't.
I can see how difficult it would be in that situation though - especially is the sick person was asking to die.
We watched my dad deteriorate over 8 years. his pain was so bad he was on a daily dose of codiene that would kill me in one dose, but he had built up such a tolerance to it that they just kept upping the dose.
He was in severe pain.
When his body was done, it was done. He went from a visit in MN to see me on one Sunday to dead the next.
We had to "unplug" his ventilator when the doctors said there was no hope left because dialysis would kill him faster than the sepsis was, and he died on his own in 2 hours.
I have faith that when the body really is done, it will die on its own.
ETA: I do recognize my own hypocracy though...for an animal, I do believe that in some cases euthanasia is the best choice.
I guess the difference is that a human has the capacity to understand what is happening, an animal does not have the awareness to understand that.

I don't know. I have watched many people die very painful scary deaths where I work and at the hospital I interned at. I have seen people beg to die b/c the pain is so bad, yet their family refuses hospice services.
I know I sound like a crazy person, but it some cases I also truly believe that hospice speeds up the dying process for those that might need it. By giving people enough morphine to slow down their respirations but also to keep them comfortable, I think it speeds up a process that could take weeks at times. So, when everyone says that its against the law to practice euthanasia on humans...I have to wonder just how closely the government looks at some hospice services.
Anyways, back to the original topic. I don't know if I could do it. Its quite clear that he did it out of love.
ALSO, just an FYI to all you ladies that if you don't have a DPOA for healthcare in writing, get it done. Google your state's laws and see what the form looks like - in most cases it requires a notary public to witness or just two witnesses. I know that we're not of an age where we think we need it, but it makes sure that the right people end up taking care of your wishes. If you recall the clusterfvck that was the Terry Schiavo case...its good enough reason to get the paperwork done.
