Reco a Dinner Spot Downtown

I know variants of this have been asked before but I can't find the thread.  Looking for somewhere to grab dinner before a 7:30 show at the Aronoff tomorrow.  The earliest we could get there is 5:30 but probably closer to 6:00.  My cousin mentioned wanting to get Italian but we're open to other options.  Thanks!

Re: Reco a Dinner Spot Downtown

  • Scotti's Italian on Vine St. It's a hole in the wall and a little eccentricly dark, but the food we had there was wonderful.
  • Black Finn is nice for dinner.  Also the Mexican restaurant a few doors down from the Arnoff or Bootsy's.
  • Depends on what you want to spend.  My favorite Italian resturant is Via Vita which is on the square.  You have Nada which is right next door (Mexican) or McCormick and Schmidts down by the Westin.  There is also Margaritas in Tower Place or Morton's or Jeff Ruby's for steak.

  • If you are planning on anything like Nada- call for reservations now. (or look on opentable). I work downtown and used to live downtown so I spend quite a bit of time down here on the weekends. I know most Fridays it is packed for dinner and even more so when there is a show. There are plenty of places to eat (Mayberry is open on vine next to Scotti's -- I wasnt a huge fan of the meal I had there but plenty of people rave about it). There is Shanghai Mamas which is always quick and fun, McCormick and Schmicks, Rock Bottom, Bootsys, Palamino (if you can find a seat at the bar their bar menu is great and is half off all day every day right now), Nada is popular but always packed so without a reservation you wont get in. Arnolds, Lavomatic and always a few others you can find like Local 127.

  • Via Vite is superb.  It's my favorite restaurant downtown.  Another Italian option is Nicola's.  Both are pricey, but excellent.

  • We've done happy hour at McCormick's a few times.  The wait isn't too bad and it's cheap!

  • On the other side of the square is Palominos. They have all day happy hour, and while it's not exactly Italian,. they have happy hour $5 pizzas and cocktails that are fantastic. Great pasta and salads and the bar area overlooks the square, too.
  • I really like McCormick and Schmidts, and I haven't been to most of the new places downtown so I'm not much help. I wasn't impressed with Palomino when we went about a year ago.
  • Thanks for all the ideas!  Based on my group's feedback and the amount of time that we think we'll have we are headed to Palomino's.  Yum!  Anything you'd specifically reco there?  We'll sit at the bar to get the happy hour specials (pizza!) but i'm assuming we could also do full menu if we really wanted...
