f/u to asparagus discussion
Rachael Ray has a Gastroenterologist on her show talking about how the way your pee looks can tip you off to various health problems. He said the asparagus smell is pretty much universal, and can turn up as little as 15 minutes after you eat it. Also, if you cut the tips off, the smell will be much less noticeable or go away entirely. You learn all kinds of things when you take the day off work!
Re: f/u to asparagus discussion
very interesting... I had asparagus last night but didn't really notice a smell - I thought I once read that if it's really fresh the smell is less, so maybe that helped - and also that some people just can't smell the strange smell? Although I know I'm not like that because I have been able to smell the difference before. Maybe I'm just diluting it too much with the gallons of water I drink every day.
I too have learned all sorts of new things while staying at home with nothing to do these past couple of weeks. I am kicking myself for opposing a cable box for our TV upstairs though, my channel choices are too limited (local channels only) and I hate going downstairs!!
Interesting!! I think I'll just have to put up with the smell, since the tips are the best part.
Like pp mentioned, I vaguely recall hearing that maybe the smell is less if the asparagus is really fresh - it grows wild in some areas around here, so when it's ready next season I might try getting some and seeing if it makes a difference! (I know it's safe - a number of people I know pick it and eat it.
)
We had Valentine's Day lunch at CPK and John ordered their new arugula and asparagus salad. He happily reported to me the next day that it gave him aspara-pee.
I've never ever eaten asparagus and I think it's just because the aspara-pee side effect kinda grosses me out.
LMAO!
