suggestions on where to live in chapel hill?

We are moving to Chapel Hill for a year starting at the end of June.  DH will be working at UNC hosp.  We will be renting somewhere and we have a toddler and golden retriever.  Any tips, suggestions, etc. about the area and where to live?  I've never been to NC, only SC.  So any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: suggestions on where to live in chapel hill?

  • Is he going to have a parking pass or will he have to walk or ride the bus?  If he's going to have to ride the bus, I'd base the search on the busline.

Some of the buses that go to the hospital also go to the mall, and I used to take the bus from there.  Some people would live close enough to walk there, some would park and ride.

Chapel Hill is a great place to spend some time, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

  • We lived at The Pointe at Chapel Hill and really liked it. It is pretty pricey, but it is right on the busline (beginning of the line so full buses won't drive by). The apartments are spacious and well-kept. There is a really nice pool and TONS of kids there.

I have also lived in Shadowood Apartments - these are cheaper, but more run down and only have tiny stack washer dryers. I wouldn't recommend for a family with a toddler.

Unless you want to live with all students - steer clear of Mill Creek, Chapel Ridge, Chapel View, and The Verge.

I know lots of grad student types who love Meadowmont Apartments and Alta Springs.

If you aren't married to Chapel Hill, there are cheaper apartments in Carrboro that are still on the busline and might allow you to get more space for the same amount of money.

    Hope this helps!
