Re: Lent

  • despite that we don't go to church, DH is trying to make me give up pop! I haven't drank any since lent started, so I technically could still do it. I was successful giving it up for an entire year once, but I love sugar!!
  • I'm awful.  I haven't given anything up in years.  However, this year I may try to just eat healthier and workout more.
  • Nope.  I don't consider myself Catholic anymore so I don't usually participate in things like that.  However, my mom always taught us growing up that if we wanted to give up something we could, but it would be better to do something selfless and nice for someone else during lent instead...so I might do that regardless of what I consider myself.  Just puts another option out there for anyone else struggling to find something to give up.

This exactly for me too.  Both my parents were raised Catholic and I was only baptized, not confirmed, etc.  We went to a Unitarian Univeralist church when I was in elementary and middle school.  Anywho...my mom always said the exact same thing :)

You must have a good mommy because I know I do!  I had to get all of my "credentials" that was my mom's one rule...then after that, it was up to me.  So I do have my communion and confirmation under me not that it means anything really.  I do sorta go by the no meat on friday rule still but only because I go out to dinner with my mom and aunt every friday and if I order anything meat I get that stern look and a smack on the hand and that appalled "TAMMY"...so then I order fish. hahaha

  • I too have all my "credentials" and grew up in a catholic family. DH grew up lutheran, but his dad was catholic so they practiced those things like giving something up & no meat Fridays, except their whole family gave up candy together. Since DH & I have been together, I have migrated to Lutheran, but have not yet converted. So I do what they do (which makes me feel like I am still honoring catholic a little bit??).

I have added giving up pop in prior years, and gave it an effort this year, but I was dragging a** this am and now have my diet coke next to me (*sigh)!

  • I'm PG.  I'm giving up enough for way longer than 40 days!
  • i have all my "credentials" too, but I haven't been to church in years Embarrassed  Instead of giving something up, I just try to do some extra things for friends and family and eat healthier and workout more.
  • I too have my "credentials" and 12 years of catholic education, and I haven't been to church in 1+ years. It just isn't something that appeals to me at this point. DH and I tried a few different churches before we were engaged because I was scouting locations for a church wedding, but when we decided we really didn't like any of them we gave up on it. I was considering cutting down my internet time, but that is mostly convenient for me since I realized I'm online waay too much these days.

  • FYI - I'm another raised Catholic here. Haven't been to church since whenever my last Catholic wedding was. I call myself agnostic now.

  • I'm not a very good one, but I'm another raised catholic/ catholic school girl here too, I always joke that being catholic is like being in the mob, once you're in you never get out... which is turning full circle on me because we're looking at churches to baptize E in. Every year  always try and give up something, partly because of the tradition , and because I like know I have enough self control to do so. I think this year I am going to give up unnecessary spending- which I need to do anyway now as a mom. I am also going to try and go to church every Sunday of lent- we'l see how long this lasts ...
