Hi everyone. I have been MIA for over a week now, but it has been a long one. I wanted to fill in those of you who may care. Everyone else can feel free to go back to their regularly scheduled nesting.
As you may remember, we went to NYC last week to see a specialist about DH's condition. Our plan was to see the doctor on Thursday, stay in NYC and have a mini-vacation until Saturday night when we would come home. As it turns out, the antibodies that are attacking DH's platelets have also started attacking his red cells. He was so anemic that after walking a few blocks from the subway he was completely out of breath and was feeling ready to pass out. We ended up coming home Friday morning.
The doctor met with us for about an hour and walked us through all of the possibilities (the tests didn't come back until Tuesday) and what the treatment options are. It was good to talk to such an expert.
Over the weekend DH continued to feel worse. Tuesday he called his doctor and was sent back to the hospital (Albany Med).
He is SEVERELY anemic (to go along with his low platelet count), so he has been receiving blood transfusions, IV steroids (really high dose), and he started chemotherapy yesterday. The tests the NYC doc did didn't show anything terriblly helpful, so we just have to move forward with chemotherapy, which is the next line of treatment.
So he is still in the hospital, I am home and scared. Until recently his platelets may have been really low, but at lease he has felt ok and hes been able to lead a relatively normal life. Now he feels awful and can't even stand long enough to shower.
In addition to all of this, the drugs he is taking have the potential of putting us out of the running for TTC for a while, which is hard to accept on top of everything else.
Thank you for all of your T&Ps, it was really nice to see the ladies who came to lunch yesterday. I hope to be around a little more now.
Re: update on DH
Beth,
I'm so sorry that you and DH are going through this. If you need anything please feel free to call (210-1013) - I'm just down the road from the hospital. DH loves cooking for others so I'm sure he'd be happy to set you up with a dinner plate if you need a little escape. I'll be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.
Ditto this 100%. Also, re: TTC, have they mentioned anything about freezing some samples from DH? Not sure if the treatment he's receiving will affect that or not, just something that popped into my mind.
I really hope these treatments do the trick, and quickly with little side effects. :-(
