anyone self-insured?

I think there possibly was a similar question asked before, but I can't find the post....

My DH and I have insurance through my work. But once the baby comes, it's SO expensive to have all 3 of us on the insurance. So my DH was thinking about getting insurance through Anthem (or somebody) on his own. His work doesn't offer it, there's only 2 people there...

Any suggestions, or recommendations? I was looking at Anthem and some of them appear to be too good to be true.

TIA!
Kat

  • try www.hcfor1.com  You can enter information (your zip, preferred deductibles, copays, etc) and it will list rates from several companies. HTH!

  • I recommend using an agent to self insure if you aren't comfortable making all the decisions on your own. We use Crawford Insurance in Bellevue KY. They are SUPER nice and I highly recommend them. The man I deal with is Jim Crawford, but you can call and let them know what you are looking for and they will direct you to the correct person. Their # is 859-581-2088. Tell them April Pence of UHR gave you the information.

Even if you don't use them, I still suggest calling an agent because if you ever have issues that's one more person on your side. Plus they will shop multiple companies for you and find the best fit. From what I found there isn't an additional cost because the ins. companies pay the agents through kickbacks.

  • If you are going to get individual insurance there are a few things to keep in mind. The rates are based on individual conditions/medications, age/gender, as well as how the "block" runs. Like with any policy the higher the deductible (more risk YOU take before insurance kicks in) the cheaper the monthly premium.

I would also double check your policy at work for pre-exisiting condition limitations. If later on you decide to add him back to your group plan, some plans have pre-existing limitations and may not consider "individual insurance" as creditable coverage.

    It's worth exploring..
