Hello! and question about changing name from a new nestie

Hi Nesties!  I am an occasional lurker and remember some of you from the Knottie board.  I just got married on Feb 6, and my bookmark to the Knot board keeps kicking me over to the Nestie board, so I guess it's time I make my presence known here :)

We just got our marriage certificate today, and I am about to start the process of changing my name.  Have any of you used name change kits/software?  Was it helpful, and is there a particular one you would recommend?  Or is it really not too hard to just do on my own?  Any other tips you can give me?  My apologies if this question has already been discussed a million times.  I did a quick search but didn't find anything.

Thanks!  Look forward to "nesting" with all of you!

  • I did not use a kit.  Once I got the marriage certificate I changed my driver's license and then my social security card.
  • I'm in Canada so it might have been different for me but... I just wanted to say welcome! Great to have you here :)

  • I used MissNowMrs.com.  It was somewhat helpful, but not that much.  It was nice to have all the correct forms able to print all in one place.  And you put in your info and it prints right onto the forms, so I guess for $30, it's not a bad idea.  I did still print all the forms and bring them in to places in person.  The one downfall was that I felt like I didn't even need half the forms they offered.

  • Congrats on your wedding, welcome to the board!

When I changed my name I used http://newlastname.org/.  I'm sure a pay site would probably offer more, but this is a free resource and it had everything I needed; it was very helpful.  I hope it helps you, too!

  • hey jamie, it's good to see you here :) congrats! i did not use a kit and found one unnecessary. is there a way to access old bios? my old knot bio had all the info on how to change your name w/all the links but i think the knot may have eaten up all the old bios? maybe you can find a cached version? hmm... just checked and found this old version...some of the links may be outdated but it should get you started ok, though i'm sure some of the other links pp shared may be more helpful :)
  • congrats!! i actually JUST received my certificate in the mail two days ago and i got married in november! i can't believe you got yours so fast...i guess cause you live on oahu? anyway, i was just thinking about this myself, i don't even know where to start so this post is very helpful!

  • Aloha!  Welcome to the board & congrats!

I did use a kit...just changed my drover's liscense, SSI & passport.  Used those to change the rest...bank accts, insurance, frequent flyer miles, bills, subcriptions, etc.

Once you get your marriage certificate it's fairly easy to do the rest.

  • hey jamie!  i didn't use a kit and, in fact, i'm still changing my name on some things.  i started with my DL and SS card.  i then changed my name with the company i worked for, which also changed it for my health insurance.  then i did bank accounts.  i didn't change my passport for the honeymoon and just traveled under my maiden name -- i'll change it when it expires this year.

i made a ton of copies of my marriage certificate to have on file because there are always random things here and there that you later realize need updating.  credit cards were surprisingly easy -- just call and report the new name.  no one asked me for documentation, which was kind of scary!

hope you join us over here more often!

  • thanks, ladies!  i will definitely start with my ss card and drivers license.  i thought maybe the kits would allow you to enter information once then fill out all the forms for you, but it since it sounds like i'll still need to manually fill them out, i'll probably do it without a kit.  thanks for the free resource links...they had some helpful information!
