Which is more cost effective for groceries? Biggs or Kroger? I normally shop Kroger but we are trying to save so I was curious what your opinion is between the two?
TIA!
Re: Quick question?
Can I have a third option?? If so I pick Meijer!
Kroger and Biggs I find are more expensive on a day-to-day basis. For instance, we did a quick shop on Wednesday for essentials at Kroger, and spend $40. We did a full shop yesterday at Meijer and spent $75.
It's been awhile since we've shopped at Biggs, but I found their prices were more than Meijer, but less than Kroger. I usually only consider Kroger if they are having a Mega Sale or a 10/$10 sale.
HTH!
The cheapest is Super Walmart, but they don't always have the brands I want. I think the best overall is Meijer, and Kroger's can be cheaper if you really use coupons/sale combos. When I was comparing ads last weekend, the prices at Biggs were more for the most part on the things I wanted to buy.
We do Kroger...it's literally across the street from our house so it's really convenient. My average weekly grocery bill for 2 people is $40ish and I cook a lot (as evidenced by my blog!). This is usually our lunches for the week plus 4-5 dinners and sometimes treats like cookies or cakes. I will say though that we don't generally buy snacks so I think that's how we can help keep our weekly bill relatively low. We also like their gas rewards program.
I personally don't like Meijer..I find the store layout really hard to shop (takes me like 2x as long!) and I feel like their produce goes bad faster for some reason. IL's used to shop at Bigg's because they liked their meats and pump perks there but said it's more expensive than Kroger in general. They've now switched to Kroger I think.
Some general grocery shopping money saving tips:
Latest Blog Update: Peanut Butter Cookie with Salted Peanut Caramel
When I did my price comparison list (listed the normal sales price for items I regularly buy) Meijer is 10% less expensive than Kroger. But Meijer has started to mess with their coupon policies which may or may not matter to you.
I don't go to Biggs so I can't speak to their prices or quality.
Are you into couponing? I shop at Kroger. Here is another blog that might help you save. http://mommysnacks.net/
She posts the sales each week plus what coupons are out there. She does Kroger and I think Meijer but not Bigg's.
We're loyal to Kroger. I found that WalMart a lot of times didn't carry a lot of variety in the brands that we wanted.
The nice thing about Kroger, is that when you're a loyal customer, and use your card, you get coupons tailored to what you buy. We've gotten coupons for free cereal, gatorade, ice cream, etc. - in the brands that we buy. And they take competitor's coupons. So my mom will bring me her Meijer & biggs coupons that she's not using, and I can use them at Kroger. Plus we now get 10 cents off gas at Shell.
To me I'd rather spend more on the groceries than drive out of my way to get what I need.
Ditto. We get coupons for free stuff from Krogers all the time and between working the weekly ad, I can shave $30-40 off of our monthly groceries. Then there's the gas savings on top of it - which, I've found the Hyde Park Krogers tends to have the cheapest gas around my area (though you'd think otherwise with it being Hyde Park).
Krogers tends to have better customer svc in my opinion. One time I went and the BAGGER pointed out to me that the Brownberry bread I had picked up was BOGO free but I'd only gotten one loaf - did I want her to run back and grab another loaf for me? I was really surprised.
Christine, First Thank You for referring other "nesties" to my site.
I love helping readers to save money and it truly is my passion! It excites me when new people come on board to couponing and saving money. Always remember to take it slow.
If you are just starting out with coupons, take it SLOW (I cant' stress that enough). Start with the store you most shop at. That's either Bigg's, Kroger or Meijer. My personal fav is Kroger for many reasons:
-unlimited double coupons (coupons under $.50 double, $.50-$.99 will be redeemed at $1 (Meijer will only double 2 identical coupons, Bigg's does not double at all)
- LOVE Kroger's Fuel Rewards program. You can also redeem $.10 per gallon at participating Shell gas stations now! For every $100 (before coupons) you earn $.10 off a gallon. For every 2 non federally funded prescriptions you receive 100 points. For every $50 in gift cards (not Kroger) you receive 100 points. You can receive as much as $1 off up to 35 gallons at Kroger fill stations.
- Always has plenty of stock! Kroger stores will allow you to do special orders at the customer service desk. I do this a lot and allows me to stockpile and not worry about being able to find products and clearing shelves!
- Customer Service is the best! In fact, Kroger is reaching out to us bloggers and want to know what we think. So, if you have any feedback on Kroger stores, what you would like to see, etc., let me know and I'll make sure it gets to the correct hands!
Now don't get me wrong, I shop at Meijer, Target, Walgreens and CVS at least once a month. Meijer is good for free mayo, cheap electrasol and meats along with a few other deals that they usually do ($.14 Lysol Products!)
I personally only shop Bigg's when they do their triple events. Why? Because the prices at Bigg's are higher because they are a smaller chain store. They can not compete with Kroger and Meijer since they are national chains. However, I love their Pump Perks on the milk, that's a pretty sweet deal.
I do have a write up on how to shop Kroger and Meijer. You can also read the Cincinnati Coupons Guide for additional information.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to email me at Marci@CincinnatiCoupons.net or leave a comment!
(sorry for the long post! I get excited teaching people!!!)
