He did not, major. He's supposed to come back during this season, as are Anthony Edwards, Noah Wylie, and Laura Innes.
They killed off Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Pfeifer's character) so the whole episode was surrounding that.
No, he was riding in an ambulance (in the front) while they were transporting a patient that had testified against the mob back in the day (if you recall from last season's finale) and someone had bombed the ambulance. He was doing OK right after the blast and then he had this bulge of blood building up in his neck and so they tried to fix it and then somehow he went brain dead. They did a horrible job of explaining why what was happening to him was life threatening.
I was bawling through practically the entire episode (which is odd because TV and movies almost never make me cry). My cat caught on like 5 minutes into the bawling spree and cuddled up with me and purred for the whole rest of the episode.
He was going to propose to his girlfriend right after his shift that day and had the ring in his pocket. Dr. Morris (the redhead) gave it to her after the funeral and the wake.
Seriously, I'm almost tearing up here when I think about it. I'm ridiculous.
