seeds vs plants

Do you all prefer planting from seeds or buying plants for vegetable gardens?  Where do you buy from?  Local nursery, catalog, etc.?  I'm planting my first veggie garden this year.  I'm doing raised beds.  I also want to do some landscaping in the front of our house.  I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, so any advice would be great!

Re: seeds vs plants

  • I like to start from seeds b/c it's fun & it's cheaper.  If any of my seedlings fail, then I still have time to buy plants for the garden.  I get my seeds from a catalog & buy my plants from a local nursery.

Are you still in FL?  If so, your seasons are a little different than the rest of the E. Coast (esp. if you're not in N. FL)...usually July/Aug are like my winter...nothing with grow.  At least, that's been my family's experience in the Tampa area.  You may want to ask someone at a local nursery (or garderners on your local board) when the best time to plant what is.

For example, I'm starting spring plants now, but you might be able to put tomatoes (summer plants) outside now...I won't be able to do that until May.

  • I'm in North Florida, so I don't think it gets quite as hot here as it does further south.  I was advised that I could start onions, garlic, and strawberries now.  Do you have to start your seeds in a separate pot before you actually plant it in the ground?

Yes, although I would directly sow everything you listed in teh ground.

When I start tomatoes, peppers, some greens (like swiss chard, kale...not arugula), eggplant, etc., I start them inside in pots.  Partly this is because when I need to start the seed it's too cold outside for them.  The other part is because I like to have more control over the seed starting process.  Inside I control the water, light, exposure to pests, etc.

Good luck!  I envy your long growing season!
