commercials vent

So why is it that I can only get Canadian broadcasting for the Superbowl (when I wish I got the US ones for the commercials) but most of the channels I get broadcasting the Olympics, which are being held IN Canada, are American?? I'm kinda getting tired about them going on and on and on about their own athletes but hearing very little about Canadians.

Re: commercials vent

  • That's odd. I thought the US was only showing it on NBC. In Canada they games are on CTV, TSN and sportsnet. Unlike NBC the Canadian channels air Olympics all day everyday even when there is nothing to air. I'm surprised you haven't been able to catch the Canadian coverage.
  • Maybe Danielle doesn't have cable?  My dad only gets US coverage, because he doesn't have cable/satellite
  • ??

Lots of Canadian stations are broadcasting the Olympics

  • It's not that I don't get any, but just that most. I found CTV but it seems like I have tons of versions of NBC, all playing different events (some live, some not live) so lots of choices, but only 2 versions of CTV and they are always playing the same event, so it's like I only have one version of CTV and a variety of the American ones. Guess my TV package just sucks (we're with Bell, I think on the minimum package)

During Superbowl time, we couldn't get a US version anywhere.

I'm sure tuscanabride can explain this better and with proper terminology but that's law in Canada.  If there is a Canadian station and an American station broadcasting the same programming, the Canadian station takes over the US one.  I believe it's part of the CanCon program and geared towards keeping Canadian television and stations alive by helping to secure advertising revenues.

It does suck for things like the superbowl.  I wonder if they could ever make the argument that the US commercials are actually a part of the entertainment programming, not just ad space.  But then again, who's gonna fight that battle?

  • I have Digital Cable, and we have a ton of Canadian coverage of the Olympics. DH can even watch coverage in french if he wants.
