it's been a long week!

It's been a rough week!  We are both fine; tired, but fine.

Jim had emergency surgery early Thursday morning (1230am) to have his appendix removed.  He had the surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center.  The surgery took about an hour and 45 minutes, and went fine.  They had to do an "open" rather than laparoscopic procedure, because of all of the scar tissue from his bullet wounds.  He spent about an hour in recovery, then back to his room on the surgical ward.  We were able to go home about 330pm on Thursday.  It's a little crazy that one can be discharged 12 hours after having an organ removed, but that's what happened.  Jim hurts, and is moving really slow, but is doing as good as can be expected.

The ordeal started Tuesday afternoon.  Jim started feeling incredible pain in his abdomen just after lunch.  He thought it might be food poising, since he had lunch at a dubious-looking steak plate place on Pearl Harbor, but he wasn't vomiting or any other signs of food poisoning.  Finally about midnight (now Wednesday am) he decided he needed to go to the emergency room.  I drove him to the Tripler ER, where we waited for almost 4 hours in the waiting room to be seen.  Jim was feeling worse and worse, and the charge nurse said it could be another 2-3 hours before he could be seen.  At that point we decided to leave.  Jim said (and I am sure he was lying) that he was feeling a bit better, so we went home to try to get some sleep.  He was still really hurting, and Wednesday afternoon he decided to go with me to see a doctor (I have a terrible chest cold).  Doc said, "you need to go to the ER, you're showing signs of appendicitis."  So off we went, back to the ER, but we went to Castle Medical Center in Kailua this time.  Got right in to see a nurse, and the doc came by not long after.  They did a CT scan, and sure enough, his appendix was enlarged.  They decided to transfer us to Tripler, since as a vet Jim has privileges there.  So off we went again to Tripler, but this time we met one of the surgeons in the ER, who took us up to a room on the ward.  After a parade of doctors, resident doctors and surgeons, he was taken back for surgery at 1230am on Thursday.  He'll be out of work two weeks, on restricted duty for 30 days, and won't be going to korea next month (darn).

So...it's been a super long week.  Thankfully I didn't have to work Thursday or today, although I do have to work this weekend.

We could use some healthy healing vibes.

I hope you all have had a less exciting week than we have.
