Grammar gurus of Nov 08...

I was helping the skids w homework... and I got stuck... I THOUGHT I had it right, but DH changed it... I still think I'm right..., but what do you think... ? I feel weird not feeling confident in a 5th grade level!...

Ok, here's one for you... let me know if it's IS or ARE for the 'blank':

When I go camping, the scenery I like the most
 ______  mountains and beautiful flowers.

Re: Grammar gurus of Nov 08...

  • I say "are".  I think that scenery implies multiple things rather than one thing (like scene).

  • is

you're referring to the scenery (singular noun) not the mountains and flowers.

That's a tricky one that has tripped me up before.

  • I think it's "are". Since there are 2 thinks "you like".

  • Ahh, I was wrong!  That's a hard one though!

  • My initial reaction was 'IS'.  DH changed it to 'ARE'.  My sis (who is very into grammar) says 'IS'.  So, either DH or I will get repremanded later by the EX... unless their teacher doesn't know.  Now, THAT would be interesting!
  • I would think it's "are".

    This.  Scenery is singluar.

    This.

You have to break it down to the simplest clause and that will give you the answer.

    Noun Verb:  Scenery Is

You would never say Scenery Are

I would personally reword a sentance that came out this way.

When I go camping, I love to see the mountains and beautiful flowers.

  • This would be why I failed English/Grammar and anything to do with this subject.
  • I spent way too much time with Strunk and White while pursuing my English degree.

I like to go to bartleby.com when I can't remember the rules.  Or there's also a website called grammargirl that makes it easy to understand.

The truth is, the rules follow usage and change over time.  They are very "bendy," as my friends say.

  • And I should add that I can't spell "sentence."  This makes me look very credible. Smile

    Yup - scenery = is

  • Unfortunately, they had to use the word Scenery in their sentence...

So, when the teacher comes back and says the kids are wrong... EX is going to let DH know and DH is going to say Lorelai had it right the first time... ;)  HA!

oh wait. now I'm going to be the one doing ALL the homework with them ALL of the time...  (eh, it's interesting...)

  • Go Lorelai for getting it right.

I thought 'is' since scenery is singular, but I checked it in MSWord to be sure. When I typed it in as are, it came up with the correction for is.  Ahhh...computers =P.
