Huckabee: McCain made big mistake

Huck: McCain would make "huge mistake" to skip debate

The former Arkansans governor lost his "country first" talking points, it seems:

MOBILE, Ala. ? Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday that Sen. John McCain made a ?huge mistake? by even discussing canceling the presidential debate with Sen. Barack Obama.

McCain?s campaign has said the Republican wouldn?t participate in the Mississippi debate Friday unless there was a consensus on the financial crisis, but Obama still wants the debate to go on.

Huckabee defeated McCain in the Alabama GOP primary in February.

Huckabee said Thursday in Mobile that the people need to hear both candidates. He said that?s ?far better than heading to Washington? to huddle with senators.

He said the candidates should level with the people about the financial crisis and say the ?heart of this is greed.?

Huckabee said he still backs McCain?s candidacy, but said the Arizona senator should not have put his campaign on hold to deal with the financial crisis on Wall Street. He said a president must be prepared to ?deal with the unexpected.?

?You can?t just say, ?World stop for a moment. I?m going to cancel everything,?? Huckabee said.

Huckabee being the voice of reason in this madness. Who knew?

Re: Huckabee: McCain made big mistake

  • I have said it before, and I'll say it again.  Now that I am not threatened by his presidency, I love the Huckster.  He's very honest and genuine.

    I will ditto this sentiment.

That said, I think he's officially out of the McLoop b/c McCain is debating.

Or wait... maybe he said this knowing McCain was going through with it so that people would realize McCain didn't make a mistake.... whatever.

  • Huckabee made these comments while McWaffle was still contemplating his next move.

He made the comment yesterday right? He should have known by that point McCain was going to debate today, if he is still in the loop.

  • I always loved Huckabee....but I'm sure that's no surprise.
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • I honestly, all kidding aside, believe the Republicans seriously missed the boat with Huckabee.  While I disagree with his extreme social conservatism, I can't even muster up dislike for the man.

Seriously, it would be a very different race.

Also, McCain really should have chosen Romney, especially in light of this financial crisis.

Do you have some inside source in the McCain camp? I'm serious. You seem to have info that no one else has on McCain's next moves.

I agree bunny....in fact, since McCain went with a very socially conservative VP anyway, why not pick Huckabee?

I so wish I did! No I just watch the news analysts on Fox and read certain blogs of connected republicans. They were speculating by the time of the "bipartisan meeting" and afterwards that McCain would most likely debate b/c that was the most politically expedient move. You could tell b/c the meeting was controlled by the Dems, not Bush and definitely not McCain. McCain was only working in the background. That's not the move of someone who would stick it out in Washington, making speeches on the senate floor.

  • I agree, 2Vermont.  Though I don't agree, I get a strong good person vibe from Huckabee.  And I don't have a huge problem with him fiscally.  I like that he supports social programs.

Actually, he's kind of like a social justice Catholic!

Okay, not to be nitpicky, but everything you just said is political speculation by 3rd parties, not a given. I don't think anyone from inside the McCain camp was saying yesterday that McCain would be at the debate, for sure.

This is probably why I liked him the best....I could relate to him in a lot of ways.  His views were more "Catholic" to me than Republican or Democrat......if that makes sense.

I think I should clarify the above because it doesn't sound right. What I mean is that I have never been fully happy with either party because neither one "owns" the Catholic viewpoint.

It was a given that he didn't cancel the debate, he only delayed it. Of course the rest of it was speculation, but it was right. They couldn't have made it obvious McCain was going to debate this Friday, that would have spoiled the entire maneuver.

Oh, I'm sure there would be outrage if Huck was the nom.  Maybe not from you specifically, but trust me.  Dude be crazy.  This has not changed.  And he's able to be all nice now because he's not campaigning, but he can be subtle-mean.  Remember the jab against mormonism?

  • I wonder if Huckabee is playing the Clinton card and hedging his bets for 2012?
