What can you tell me about Binghamton?

I posted this a few months ago and got some good replies but can't find the post and the PM's I had disappeared in a nest server glitch, so forgive me :)

Looks like I will be moving to the Binghamton area.  I am starting to look at homes online but I am not sure what areas are good areas to be in or which ones should be avoided at all costs :)  There seems to be so many little villages and towns too.  I am trying to narrow down the search a little bit.

We will have a toddler and a newborn and would like to be in an area with parks and families etc.  We don't want to be in the middle of no where and have to drive to everything if you know what I mean.

Anything else you can share would be great.

Thanks!

Re: What can you tell me about Binghamton?

  • I was born and raised in Endicott, which is a town about 15 minutes West of Binghamton.  Seriously, you can get anywhere in the  Binghamton area in 15 minutes it seems like!

I would look at Endicott, Endwell, Vestal, Johnson City, Port Dickinson.  Use Broome County when searching for homes.  There are going to be good and bad neighborhoods in each town.  If you want to PM me, I can help you out with what might be some better areas to check out!

Binghamton is a small community and it's had some rough times, economically.  But there is a lot of shops, movie theaters, parks, a zoo, Binghamton University, restaurants, theaters, and we have a minor league hockey and baseball team.

Like I said, feel free to PM me!

  • ah Binghamton- my hometown..the good thing about it is - you aren't really in the "middle of nowhere" there and everything is about 15 minutes from each other..

In Binghamton proper- the most popular "family" sides of town are the westside and the southside. The westside is centered around a park (rec park). The southside is more modern homes (think built in the 70s), where the zoo is, and is closer to Vestal which is quickly becoming the shopping center of the area.

In terms of the towns/villages- if i wasnt in Binghamton I would choose Endicott/ Endwell or Vestal (thinking of school districts)...

I remember answering this (and it had way more info) but this is what I have right now...

    Good Luck...

  • I can help you out if you are specifically looking into Binghamton itself because I was raised, and live, there.  I'd say look into the west side of Binghamton for older homes with lots and lots of character.  There are tons of homes for sale.  The east side is typically sketchy.  Parts of the north side are as well. I live on the south side and if you can afford houses around MacArthur Elem. School (we looked at a cute one on Vestal Ave for $140,000) then you can't really go wrong. I'm closer to General Hospital (about a mile away) and it's sketchier.
  • I also live in Binghamton proper, in the 1st Ward area, and have lived in the area since 1985 (grew up in Endicott, then Vestal, JC and now Binghamton). If you're in Endicott/Endwell, Johnson City (JC), Vestal, Binghamton, you're in a pretty central location. I've also done student teaching in the area and have friends/relatives that teach so you're welcome to send me questions about the school districts; I now work in admin at the university. The strongest job options here are generally engineering (BAE, Lockheed), health care (UHS and Lourdes systems) and education, including the community college and a state university. Financially it's not the greatest, but we've been stable since IBM left the area in the mid90's,and housing costs are extremely affordable.  It's not going to have the same active calendar of social options as a large city, but there is an active art community and good theatre groups in the area. There are also a lot of nice parks, and the area is quirkily known as the 'carousel capital of the world' due to the number of antique wooden carousels in the local parks which are still free to ride if you bring a piece of garbage/recycling with you; plenty of options for young children too. You're welcome to PM me with any questions!

Whoa, Kilo, you're living in Bingo and we haven't met you yet? Lets get you to one of our gtg's. I say that as though we have them often.

I was born and raised in Bingo, up near the Front St./BCC area. I now live in Endicott. I would recommend looking in Endicott/Endwell area. Port Dickinson, Chenango Bridge and Hillcrest areas are nice as well. Good luck and ask any questions you might have.
