Has anyone tried doing the 10,000 step per day rule/challenge/whatever you want to call it? I finally got my pedometer over the weekend and thought that 10,000 wouldn't be so bad. Right now, I'm at almost 5,000. I still have a ways to go and I'm not sure if I'm going to make it. I'm definitely more stationary when I get home.
Re: 10,000 steps per day
I wear one all the time - - it's my motivation to move - lol! I aim for 70k/week instead of 10k/day. Basically, my 'stay-at-home' days, I get about 2,500 steps (wow!) so I try to walk outdoors (or the mall) a few times a week to get a ton of steps to balance out my low days. When the weather is nicer, it's easier to take a quick walk around the block after dinner to get some steps in and avoid my super low days.
Overall, wearing it makes me realize just how little I walk on some days and keeps me in check. I don't always hit 70k, but try to at least hit 60k in the colder months when I'm indoors more.
ETA: I keep a spreadsheet of my daily steps (dork!!) and when I was starting out, I just tried to beat my prior week's total. It's hard to get 70k a week!
mine broke last week, i had been wearing it at work b/c we were doing laps when it was dead. some mornings i had 9500 before i left at 9am! i usually got between 10-12k depending on where i was going, not including going for a run.
it definitely makes you think about what you're doing!
I do this too. I even started making charts. My current pedometer tracks steps and moderate steps and moderate minutes. My goal is to get 30 minutes of moderate steps 5 days a week. I am currently failing miserably at this goal. I try to get some in at work, but I am ready for spring. It is much easier to get steps in warmer weather.
Yes, I have done this. It was sad to see how few steps I actually took throughout the day! Honestly, most of the time I did not reach 10,000 steps without going on a walk. ( I usually went 3 miles a day)
It is a huge motivator! Here are a few ideas I used to help increase the number of steps I took a day.
1. Always use the stairs
2. Go to a bathroom that is on a different floor than your office (or one that is located on the opposite side of the building)
3. Someone on this board mentioned using a printer/fax that is not close to your desk
4. if you need to talk to someone (and have the time) walk to their office vs. picking up the phone
5. Park further away from the store than you usually do.
Good luck on your challenge!!
