NER: Johnny Depp to play Mad Hatter...

Disney loves Johnny Depp, check out all the movies!

Depp to play Tonto, Mad Hatter in upcoming films
Thursday September 25 12:09 AM ET

Johnny Depp is becoming the new face of Walt Disney Studios. The actor will preside over the manic tea party in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" as the Mad Hatter and will play Tonto in "The Lone Ranger," whose latest screen incarnation is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Disney formally announced the casting Wednesday at a studio presentation. It also said it is officially in development on a fourth installment of "Pirates of the Carribean," which would see Depp reprise his popular role of Captain Jack. On the "Alice" front, Depp and Burton -- who first worked together in 1990's "Edward Scissorhands" and most recently collaborated on "Sweeney Todd" -- have formed one of the longest-running director-actor partnerships in modern Hollywood. When Burton committed to filming a new live-action/CG-animated version of "Alice," Depp was touted as the most likely candidate to play the Mad Hatter -- after all, having worked with Burton on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," he's practiced in wearing a top hat. Mia Wasikowska, the young Australian actress who appeared in HBO's "In Treatment," has the film's title role. Matt Lucas, who stars in the sketch comedy series "Little Britain USA," which debuts on HBO Sunday, is set to play the dual roles of Tweedledum and Tweedledee. "Ranger," meanwhile, puts Depp back in business with Bruckheimer, who produced the "Pirates" movies. Tonto is the Native American colleague of cowboy hero the Lone Ranger. The casting could stir up controversy with Native American groups, who might accuse the studio of putting a white actor in the role. One factor that could counter such an argument is Depp's mixed ancestry, which includes German, Irish, and Cherokee. "Ranger" is being written by "Pirates" scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio and has no director at this time.

  • there were rumors he would be the Riddler in future batman too! I think he would be a perfect choice for the Mad HAtter and the Riddler - he has that right amount of dark insanity ;)

I loved it! Way more true to the tone of the book IMO than the previous movie. Book was quite dark and sarcastic which the older movie really did not capture.

Aw, see, I loved it too!  I think Depp is perfect-o for this role.  I love Alice in Wonderland anyway.

  • understandable... but that movie was so nicey nice... and Roald Dahl doesnt really write nicey nice books ya know? His books are all dark (incl Choc Factory). So, having read the book, I really liked the Depp movie way better.

Willy Wonka as done by Wilder is slightly eccentric but jovial man. In the book... he is kinda off his rocker crazy and bitter, a hermit. Like Depp's version.

  • I'm not a Johnny Depp fan. Don't care for him. Unfortunately, I loooove Tim Burton, so I end up watching a lot of Johnny Depp movies.

majorwife, I didn't care for his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, either. I have a lot of high expectations and uncalled for animosity towards movie remakes and movies based on books I love (espcially childhood books). They're never as good as they should be. (Unless Stephen King writes the screenplay for a movie based on one of his books.)

Depp was AWESOME in C&CF.  It was the musical numbers that drove me up the wall.  Why, oh why, couldn't they keep the original musical numbers and just put Depp's beautiful face and maniacally dark persona into Wonka's role?  ::sigh::

  • Ditto major & meshaliu. I think Depp will be good as the mad hatter, but I hated him in C& the CF and thought the whole movie sucked. Poor Roald Dahl.
  • I LOVE Johnny Depp. He's one of my favorite actors right now.

I'm mixed on C&CF... I thought the remake was good, but I still love the original.

I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory okay, but in my opinion, Johnny was at his best in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.  If you haven't seen it, I recommend it - if you like weird movies. And I do.

Didn't that used to be your siggy?  I loved it!
