We have these friends who have lived "conventionally" for as long as I have known them. Sure they recycle and do some green things but nothing major. I know that I have talked to them before about some green issues and it's like.."meh, animals. I know that a couple times I have mentioned that MH and I have tried to find humanely raised meat etc b/c it bothers me etc..and "eh whatever" I know they thought I was weird. Last week they somehow stumble upon "Food inc." Mah god, the sky has fallen! DOWN with corporate farms! DOWN with meat! Suddenly they are vegan! It's like their eyes are WIDE open with this ONE movie! They are planting a "protest" garden, post multiple posts on FB about their vegan meals, post other FB rants against corporate farms and the man..but they are..not educated rants. They post about why we don't "need meat" but it's not even coherent. On top of that..I am positive they don't realize all the differences between organic companies and brands etc (it's way too new for them how could they)..for example they applauded another friend and her choice to eat organic peanut butter...which as a lot of us have found--a lot of organic PBs still have palm oils in them--which can be stripping orangutans of their home!
I have posted about how they may want to look into other interesting books (Michael Pollan) and nothing. No thank you..no nothing..but they respond to people who eat raw (someone who eats raw suggested the China Study..and the guy was all about reading it.
Oh..meanwhile..while they now refuse to support corporate food, they still shop Home Depot, Target, Lowes, she drives a Beemer, he drives a truck..it's not exactly like they have looked around and made "green" their lifestyle--nor do I think they will. They outright say..that this is a protest against corporate FOOD...nothing else in their life--so hypocrisy abounds.
I honestly think I wouldn't care that much but their facebook overload is akin to lecturing..and lecturing by people who have no idea what they are talking about makes me crazy. I actually had to take one of them out of my feed which makes me sad. Am I crazy to not be happy for this change they are trying to make and just be patient or...I feel like they are fake somehow. Just overboard.
Errr..any thoughts?
Re: odd vent...excuse the long ramble
Ugh. I'm annoyed just thinking about these people.
However, I give them maybe 3 months before they fall off the wagon? I don't think they'll suddenly be trading in their BMW for a hybrid anytime soon.
More power to them for wanting to clean up some of their choices, but sounds like they aren't doing it in a smart and educated manner.
The best thing I could say is live/lead by example. For example, my MIL talks all the time about how she doesn't eat wheat, it's the devil food basically, gluten will kill us all, lecture lecture lecture about how awful carbs are (any carbs), etc. She does that while eating a bag of Doritos and Hershey's Kisses. So whenever I'm around or when they are visiting, I just make it a point to have tons of fresh fruits and veggies and no crap in the house. It just makes me feel better
I think it is unrealistic for them to change everything at once. Food is a good place to start. They may not continue to be as extreme as they are now, but hopefully some positive changes will come for it.
I also think people get way too upset about things on facebook.
Thanks for your opinions. I appreciate them all. I don't expect them to change everything in their lifestyle all at once or all the time. In some respects..that is almost what I think bothers me..is that yesterday--they cared nothing about these issue--and today they not only care (awesome, go for it--welcome to the club!) but they have gone overboard with the (uneducated) preaching.
I'm not really..."upset" about it..except that between the two of them I probably get between 10 and 12 posts a day in my newsfeed about this. It really is cluttering my feed!
