Job search question

I haven't looked for a job in quite awhile.  Can you ladies offer any tips/sources for looking in the current economy?  I feel completely overwhelmed and don't really know where to begin.   Thanks in advance.

Re: Job search question

  • Well...I can tell you what they told Nick, but this my not help you that much 'cause your situation and his are different.

The easiest thing is through people you know, of course. Then through temp agencies, because a lot of companies instead of hiring directly go through temp agencies 'cause that way is easier for them to get rid of you if you don't work out (less paper work and less liability). Also get an linked-in account and check other online job search engines.

One of my friends used Monster.com, a lot of people say it doesn't work...but she posted her resume and a company actually called her before she even applied to anything.

You can also get a career assistance agent to help you find for a job.

  • DH had the most luck with monster.com, dice.com (mainly for computer related jobs), and personal connections. He did get some interviews/referrals through recruiters that found him through monster or dice. He also searched for jobs online through monster, dice, and Craigslist.
  • I got my current job through a personal connection. Had my friend e-mail her friend my resume and here I am!

My friend's fiance who works at the Patent office said that in order to get someone to pay attention to him he found the manager of a division he felt he would be a good fit in, and called him. He got a job.

  • Check out the federal government right now (I'm a government civilian). They are hiring significant amounts of people since all the baby boomers are retiring...  The pay is actually good and the benefits are phenomenal.  As younger people join the federal government, the quality of the workforce is increasing.  I highly recommend checking out www.usajobs.gov.  I know my office alone is opening 5 new facilities across the country in the next year - HUGE growth because of the stimulus plan!

  • I got my current job just by going around to all of the distributors around me and got lucky with timing. I also looked at monster.com, careerbuilder.com, craig's list & indeed.com daily. GL!

  • It seems that there isn't one best way because now every company is doing it differently!  My law firm only posts on our own website and on monster.  We don't use a temp service because its unnecessary spending I suppose.  DH has had luck on Craigslist and I've found a lot of stuff on careerbuilder, I personally like it better then monster.  You can also go to the website for whatever state your applying in and they will have their own job boards.  Word of mouth does always seem to work the best though, email everyone you know and let them know you're looking and to let you know if they hear of anything!
  • Have you considered taking a state civil service test and looking that way?  Other than that I LOVED indeed when I was job hunting.  Also, I would go directly to companies websites and look for jobs on there, they don't always list all of them on job search sites.

When Aaron was job hunting he would put on a suit and hand deliver his resume to companies he was interested in whether they were hiring or not and he got his first job that way.

     Good luck!
