Best place for a family? Need some NY help!

My DH is looking at a potential transfer to NYC from MI.  Right now we live in a 1800sq. ft. 3 year old home with the backyard etc...  Typical for our area.  I know that things are different out there but want to have as much comforts from home as we can.  We have 3 kids and LOTS of toys so we will need the space.  My question is what are the best areas for us to look?  Good schools are a must.  We are open to all areas inc. NJ.  Thanks!

Re: Best place for a family? Need some NY help!

  • Are you looking to stay in the city or willing to do the suburbs. How much can you afford to pay in rent or to buy?

You might want to try the Hudson Valley board, we are mainly NYC here.

  • I agree with the pp...it all depends on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. I'm in Staten Island and comparable to what you have now (1800 sq, detached with a yard in a nice neighborhood) will probably start at $400,000 (at least). Good luck...

Edit: I just realized you said your house is 3 years old. For a newer home, make $450,000 and up...

  • We will rent at first.  We are open to both suburbs and city but I think price will determine all in the end.  We don't want to go more than $3000.00 mth.  BUT we still need 3 bedrooms...  Is this even possible?  Safety and good schools are our first priority.
  • I'd probably recommend Westchester or NJ if you're going for good public schools.  Most people I know who grew up in Manhattan attended private schools.

  • I replied on the bump before I saw your post here.

Just out of curiosity I looked to what it would cost to rent a 3BR on Staten Island, and it should definitely be within your range.

Here's the link to the listings on SILive.com if it helps, link.

If you have any questions on a particular neighborhood, feel free to ask.  GL!

  • What about Bay Ridge, Brooklyn?  That's a possibility.  Maybe even Forest Hills, Queens.

  • I think your best bet is NJ, but it depends on how far from the city you are willing to be.  You can find a 3 BR place for around 300,000-350,000 in the Bloomfield/Nutley area, but it will be an old house.  Some of them are redone and have a lot of charm, but others need a lot of work. If you want a newer place that is not a townhouse, you are going to have to spend at least $400,000 and you'll have to go farther into central NJ (=longer commute).

PM me if you want more info on NJ.

  • you'd probably be able to rent a good size place for that budget in forest hills (and the schools are reportedly good) but i think when you're ready to buy, heading outside the city is going to get you a lot more for your money.

  • Check out Bayside, Queens.  GREAT public school district, and you can find some deals on houses too.  My house is a three bedroom, semi-attached (meaning we share a wall with a neighbor) and with a backyard - right now you could probably get a comparable home for $450K in my area.  My house was built in 1925, though - newer homes with three or more bedrooms in Bayside are going to be at least $600K.

  • I'll put in my 2 cents for Westchester.  The cost of living is high, but the schools are amazing.  I have no idea what rental costs are like, but a 3 bedroom house is typically $400-$550K (depending on the town)

Some of the best school districts:  Briarcliff, Chappaqua, Bronxville, Scarsdale, Yorktown, Mount Pleasant, Irvington

It's absolutely beautiful here, fantastic parks and wonderful commuter train system to easily get into the city.

Forest Hills has 3 bedrooms for $2700 per month. (google Parker Towers). But I don't think you'd be able to find that in Manhattan in any location. FH is great and has excellent schools.
