I hate it so much. I also hate that I have to file an American tax return for my Australian earnings. And then file an exemption so I don't have to pay taxes on those earnings a second time. So stupid.

I, too, hate tax time. MH is already on edge. We are probably going to owe about $40,000 this year. He is technically self-employed, therefore does not have any tax whatsoever taken out, and also has to pay self-employment taxes and such. This is the first year of this job, so the first time we have had to deal with this. Sure, we knew about this and planned/set aside for it, but it still stinks. And, as of now, we're still not sure of ther exact amount we'll owe, so we're just hoping it's not more.
I used to love doing my taxes....it was a game of "how much will I get back this year?" Since getting married, never again, I guess!
ME TOO. Since I'm self-employed I usually save up all of my work with receipts, mileage, etc until the last minute and drive myself nuts. Instead of doing it as it happens like I should....which of course I promise to do every year after I pull my hair out at tax time and I don't. Usually MH is all over me to get my stuff done - I'm surprised he hasn't bugged me yet this year.
On the flip side, I incorporated my business 3 years ago and it saves me TONS in taxes.
holy smokes!! I can't even imagine!!
me too! since having the baby i am now doing contract work part time so i'm in the same boat - it's great when you're getting paid but it sucks big time when it's tax season and you OWE a ton of money
amy, i'm super lucky b/c while i do keep track of my own mileage as i go along, MH takes care of all the other stuff as far as receipts/deductions go. plus my dad is a CPA so he looks things over for us and gives us tips on how to owe less, so i guess we should be grateful for that!

LUCKY!
i just started mine, we are getting money back but this is my first full year of paying HI state income tax...um let's just say my net is about 50% less than my gross...holy cow! and HI state is witholding our state refunds til july...wtf??? so i think i'm gonna change my w-4 to 20 dependents and have zero taken out...geez.
When I was self-employed I paid quarterlies...WAY less stressful than having to shell out a huge lump sum every April. Also, make sure you take EVERY deduction possible...using an accountant that specializes in small business, etc. is worth the cost (and those fees are deductible business expenses too). I can honestly say our taxes are so much easier now that that we're just down to two W-2's...there was a time when we litterally filed 20 1099MISCs between J and I. Not fun.

Oh wow, are you gonna have to pay Americans taxes even after you got ur Australian citizenship? What about Australian taxes? Either way, sounds like a pain to deal with all these things you have to file =( I like to use TurboTax to do my taxes cuz it makes my life easier and I don't have to worry about forgetting anything since we moved between states last year.
The USA requires it's citizens to pay tax on anything they earn abroad, even if they've already paid tax in the country where they earned the income. Stupid, I know. The good news is that if you earn under $91,400USD (which I definitely do lol), you can also file an exemption so you don't have to pay taxes in the USA on your foreign earned income. But you still have to file the whole long tax return every year, and then do another one for Australia in a few months time.
That is CRAZY! And irritating!
Jaime, I love being self-employed but the tracking is a PITA. So lucky you have a family member who handles tax stuff! I pay my taxes monthly, I know I'd not be disciplined for quarterly. My accountant processes my "payroll" for me (I am considered an amployee of my corporation so I write myself a paycheck and a distribution check every month), calculates my taxes and sends me the coupons each month. It costs $65 per quarter, but worth it to keep me on track.
