seed starting question

I started some seeds, but I realize that my basil and oregano seeds were too tiny for me to pick up with my fingers. So, I put a little pinch in each pot.

Now I know that I should have used a pair of tweezers to pick up the seeds, but hindsight is always 20/20.

The oregano has a bunch of starts in each cup, and I know that I'm going to have to weed some of them out if they are to survive.

How do you know which ones to take out and which ones will be strong and live?

Re: seed starting question

  • you can snip instead of tweeze.  I've heard some arge that snipping distrubs the roots, soil less, FWIW.

Generally, you want to keep the ones that look the strongest, are less leggy, etc.  If you can't tell, just pull/snip at random.

  • With something as tiny as oregano, I would just make a guess as to which ones will survive. With basil, I usually remove the larger seedlings, to give the smallest ones room to grow. (I also still end up with way too much basil every year.)

As far as handling tiny seeds, a pencil eraser works pretty well for picking them up.

What is your weather like, if you're in Indiana and already starting seeds? I'm in KS and dying to get my setup going...

  • LOL. The weather here in Indiana sucks, and I've started the seeds anyway. I know they will probably be huge before I can plant them outside, but I don't care.
  • I'm jealous. I'm itching to get started but it is simply too early here. Sigh. Last year I had loads of tomatoes in milk cartons begging to be replanted. I will show some restraint this year. I will... I will... Smile
