Swollen tongue - WTF??

It happened right after I ate a Lara Bar last night (I probably eat one every day and this flavor 3 times a week).  I felt like food allergies that I've heard described to me because my throat also felt very tight and thick.  It wasn't horrible, but very odd.  This morning I woke up and my tongue was super swollen - WTF?!?  I'm freaked out a little bit!  It's better now, but still bigger than normal.

Re: Swollen tongue - WTF??

  • I would definitely mention it to your doctor.  I got scared a few months ago when I had hives in my mouth.  We never found a specific cause, but my doctor prescribed me an epipen in case it happens again and gets worse.  It's nice to have it always in my purse just in case.  I think your throat closing up would be one of the scariest things.

  • that definitely sounds like an allergy, but kind of weird that it is something you eat all of the time & just now you have a reaction.  I would definitely mention it to your dr...probably nothing, but always better safe than sorry.

My boss recently had a sinus/allergy attack & her tounge was swollen, not enough to restrict breathing, but enough that she kept biting it.  Her dr said it was normal, just another reaction (like sneezing or watery eyes) -- seemed a little more serious to me than sneezing or watery eyes but hey I am no MD!

  • you can develop allergies. i would take some benadryl and avoid the lara bars for a while and see if it still happens. of course there could be an ingredient in those bars that you eat anyway and get a reaction, but still...
  • Hm, that's weird that it happened after eating something that you normally eat already. Did you eat anything else before the Lara Bar? Usually when I get hives, it starts an hour after I intake whatever I'm allergic to. But I've never had it in my mouth. I hope you find the culprit and feel better soon!

  • Yikes, scary!  I'd take a benadryl & call your doc...sounds like allergies for sure.  On our HM in Maui I had a similar experience after eating sushi.
