I'm going to the Dr next month to discuss longer term BC. I wanted to get some ideas before I go see her. Does anyone have any recs? I'm already on the pill, so looking for something else. Thank you ladies

Re: Recommend your BC
Hi Lisa! How was San Diego?!
I'm not much help with your questions since I too have been on the pill for 7 years, orthotricyclen lo, and am fed up with taking something daily. DH and I discussed it this weekend and after I finish up these last 2 packs that I've already paid for I'm going to stop them. We're just going to use prophylactics
I'm curious too! I am doing the same thing next week. TIA!
I don't know how much help this is, but I was on the Nuvaring for over a year. My overall experience with it was ok. I liked the idea of not taking something every day. I experienced VERY light periods while on it as I have with the pill so its the same in that area. As for comfort, I could not feel it and not during sex (DH couldn't either). One complaint I did have with it was I had a lack of 'desire' to have sex - it made me not want to. Basically all you do is insert the ring and then after 3 weeks you remove it and during that week you will get your period. Then on the (I think*) it was the 5th day you insert another one even if you still have your period. It's been awhile so the insert day may be off.
I've seen commericals for that thing that gets inserted by the gyno and its good for up to 5 years or something...? Not sure what its called but I have no experience with that. Might be something to check into. GL!
I think that might be Mirena. I just saw an ad for it last in a Pregnancy magazine (of all places, right?)
My doc recommended ParaGard for me for after baby. It is a nonhormonal IUD that is good for 5 years and I think - though don't quote me on this - that you don't have to have a kid first before using it. I am pretty sure that Mirena wants you to have a baby before getting it.
Good luck!
YAZ, YAZ, YAZ!!!!
I love my BC and fear the day I have to go off it
Yaz is specially for women with PMDD and severe anxiety and/or depression. My whole family has issues with mood disorders so this was a MUST for me.
All those commercials about YAZ have me spooked about it and it's potential side effects!
I can see that - They are intimidating and I think it basically stems from them not advertizing primarily for BC, but for the good mood effects instead. I've been on it for 2 years and love it. I've had no side effects whatsoever AND I'm mostly a happy camper which is the most important part! My period is 3 days tops and only really slight PMS symptoms like I may be crabby (but not noticable to others) for one day. Before I was a MESS for like a week before my period and after - crying all the time, cramping, miserable. This has totally helped my anxiety/stress levels and I attribute my lack of complete hysteria during wedding planning to this too. I'm ever grateful to the YAZ scientists
THIS!
I have not had a pregnancy and had it put in back in 2006. I love not have to take a pill everyday and plan on keeping it the full five years. There was a little cramping when I got it BUT not enought to make it not worth it. I get very vert light periods for maybe a couple days and they are very spread out, not typical cycle - maybe at least 2 months apart??
Besides the pill I have also triend the patch, did not like that at all, mainly because it was summer and I couldn't decide where to put it with a suit on.
That is amazing!! They definitely should get a medal or something if the pill is that good!!!
These commercials piss me off. ALL HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL HAVE THESE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS! It's nothing new but one person probably didn't read something and sued them now binder and binder or whatever law company wants to make a profit off of it. I've been on Yasmin for 8 years and the pill in general for 10 and no issues but it's important to ask questions and keep your dr. informed.
With that said. Don't use the copper iud if you normally have heavy, crampy periods off the pill. I asked my GYN about this and she said absolutely NOT due to my period history. She said that the copper iud tends to make periods heavier so if you had a heavy one to begin with...well you get the picture. We talked about mirena which has hormones in it and she was willing to do either for me even though I don't have kids. I haven't really thought about it much yet though. I'm very hormone sensitive and don't want to aggrivate my migraines.
Re: Nuvaring
I know this may not be an option for you, Lisa, because it sounds like you're looking for something like an IUD or Seasonal, but I thought I would share my Nuvaring experience.
I've been on the Ring for about 18 months, for the first year I really liked it. My only side effects were that some months, the week after I put a new ring in, I would have some uncomfortable dryness in my lady business. That went away... don't know why.
Now, 18 months in, I'm noticing more negative side effects after practically singing from mountain tops about how much I loved it.
I guess my hormones/body are changing, and now I notice I can feel it (the ring) more and it's uncomfortable. Also I have noticed that my sex drive is at absolute 0, the week I put a new ring in my mood is generally solemn... a little b!tchy too. Also, I've noticed that the week before my period I am way more irrational / emotional / just generally unfriendly. And I'm starting to have actual cramps, which I haven't had since I started the ring. I basically had no symptoms of PMS for over a year, and now my body isn't liking the ring so much anymore I guess. I am 2 seconds away from calling my doctor and asking her to switch me back to the pill immediately (next month) because I hate feeling like this. The only thing stopping me is I work in a very small office & don't want everyone to hear my business.
Again, up until a few months ago I felt like Nuvaring was the right choice for everyone! I loved it and couldn't say enough good things about it. Now it's just not working well for me personally.
