Advice on interview scheduling??

Hey ladies,

I need a voice of reason!!

I went to a graduate school this weekend to interview.  One of the professors I was supposed to interview with wasn't able to make our "Visiting Day" because her grandmother died. I inquired about what to do about the interview and they said I needed to contact her about an interview over the phone.  Pronto.  The program is making decisions today and tomorrow, so I don't know how to politely say "I'm sorry for your loss and by the way, do you have time like, TODAY, to talk to me???".

Re: Advice on interview scheduling??

  • I would just politely say that the college asked that you contact her for a quick phone interview so they could start the selection process.
  • Is she the only professor you can interview with?  How about something like:

"I'm sorry for your loss. I've been told the program is making decisions today and tomorrow.  I still need one more interview to be considered.  If you aren't able to do so today is there another professor I should speak with?"

This acknowledges her loss, puts her on notice that you know you need this ASAP, and allows her an out (another prof) if there is one.
