Re: This is really scarey
Yikes.
I hope the rest of the legislators there realize this is a witch hunt waiting to happen. You can't always proove that a miscarriage was the result of an intentional desire to kill the baby (an not just a tragic accident) - just like in many cases doctors can't figure out why a woman who wants to be pregnant has a miscarrige.
This sounds like some overzealous anti-abortion politician who is trying to make some sort of sick point (while also killing his political career).
Ugh.
Yes - some women do things to harm their fetus. The hard part is telling the difference between a malicious act and an accident.
TTC #1 13 cycles, CP 6/09, TTC #2 1 cycle
CDing, EP'd for 13 months for #1, BFing for #2
Pregnancy Hypertension - inductions at 39w, I grow big babies: DD was 9 pounds 1 ounce 22 inches, DS was 11 pounds even 22 inches - both vaginal deliveries
Ah, yes, I was reading about this on P&CE the other day. It's infuriating.
The people that wrote this are idiots. Besides the fact that I find this law disgusting, don't they realize what a gray area it is to bring women under the law for "reckless behavior that induces miscarriage?" Lets start rolling down the list of what could be considered "reckless," and we can get into some pretty scary places.
ETA: I don't know if anyone lurks/posts over on P&CE, but here's the article that was posted there w/responses...

Seriously. Are we going to prosecute women for eating a bolonga sandwich?
I enjoyed this comment: "I, for one, would like an amendment added to the bill allowing for the fetus daddy to be prosecuted as well. Because, seriously, when you inject your life juice into a reckless hussy, that's the risk you take. Yes, I know all of us vagina carriers as essentially reckless hussies, unless we still have our hymens, but I'm sure the court system can sort all that out."

What will they think of next.
Are they going to put fat people (like myself) in jail for endangering ourselves by eating too much.
This is just ri-DONK-ulous!!
Why don't they focus more attention on the crack whores of the world that give birth to little crack head babies and throw their asses in jail? Oh wait, because we actually just throw money at them so that they can buy more crack and have more crack head babies. Sorry but I know more than one person who NOT wearing a seatbelt actually saved their and their unborn babies life. ANOTHER thing is that there are plenty of doctors that wont even see you until 8, 10 and sometimes even 12 weeks of pregnancy. What then?
This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read. Being a repeat offender of miscarriage, I am outraged that simple minded people are allowed to come up with laws like this. Ignorance.
This is crazy!! Hopefully the govenor has enough sense to not pass it. I hope my crazy ass state doesn't get any ideas!
My biggest complaint is the phycological factors that come into this. Ex. If you fall down the steps (can't see over belly and slip), and lose your baby you were longing for, you would be torn to pieces when you were acused of murder. SO WRONG!
This is exactly what I was thinking about. It would be like pouring salt on a wound, probably more like acid.

This exactly.
How stupid must someone be to think this law would be a good idea? Miscarriages happen to good people all the time and if each of these people had go to court and stand trial I think Utah would go bankrupt! There are better ways to support the pro-life cause.
(Please read with major sarcasm)
Applause to lawmakers in Utah...Researchers can now breathe a sigh of relief because Utah has finally figured out how to stop miscarriages...just threaten a women with possible life in prison. We all know that 99.9% of miscarriages are intentional and reckless acts of evil women.
Guess I'll be joining Sierra in Fat Jail too if a law like that passes
We can prevent all of this by just letting me decide who gets permanently sterilized before they begin bearing children.
This guy's on the list. And if he has kids, they are on the list.
Jesus H. Christ.
IDIOTS. I like Aria's idea best.
Count me in.
As someone who has suffered a miscarriage, I can tell you that I would have given anything to know why I lost my baby- I would have don't anything to protect my baby. I would have really lost my sh!t if I'd been prosecuted for murder. I was at my 3rd doctor visit in 3 weeks when I found out I'd lost my baby- and not everyone gets in that early or that frequently!
