Help me decide what to do--clicky poll

School has really been terrible lately.  I have a ton of work and feel like I'm drowning.  I reached out to the professors of one class (it's co-taught) and got derogatory comments and scorn.  I am trying to get through as best I can, but this is really making me question my life and whether I should be doing this.  I cried for a couple of hours last night.

DH has offered to take tomorrow off and spend it with me.  He said he would take me to the aquarium or Disneyland or whatever I want (which is not quite as big a deal as it sounds, since he works for Disney).  I would really just love to spend the day with him, since he works late most nights and sometimes on the weekends.  But tomorrow is the day I have the class with those mean professors and I don't want to give them more ammo against me.  Plus I have tons of work; I should spend my time doing that.

I should also add that I have never once missed a day of class since being at UCLA.  It's something that makes me feel really guilty.  Also, I may have jury duty next week so I might need to be missing this class next week anyway.

  • Aside from the fact that, when given the option, I will always vote for Disneyland, here's my take...

I remember being in a very similar position when I was working on my M.A. in Communications. Only, I was at the point where I was getting physically ill, couldn't keep food down, was crying almost daily -- it was awful. And it was 100% school stress induced. It got to the point where a friend of mine literally called in sick for me and hid my keys to force me to stay home and rest for a day.

You don't want to get to that point. It's not worth it. Your work will suffer, and you won't ever unburden yourself.

What I quickly learned (and have continued to learn since I am back in school AND teaching) is that class, and life, will go on if you miss a day. If you're smart enough and motivated enough to get where you already are, you've got it in you to have to do a little bit of make-up work over the weekend/down the road. If you DON'T take the time to take care of yourself, however, the situation will not ever improve -- you'll just get burried deeper.

  • SBS, that's good advice.  I'm just so scared to do it.  I feel like they will find new ways to punish me, especially if I end up getting jury duty and missing two classes in a row.  The class meets twice a week so that's not quite as awful as it sounds, but...
  • I say you need a day off... sounds like you are 100% burnt out and a break is usually the only way to fix that.
  • As someone who also experienced some of the physical effects of stress (I would black out to the point of not knowing who I was and at one point passed out on the stairs of my school) it's not worth it.  Take a day to clear your mind.  If you don't call in sick today, you will make yourself sick in the near future.

  • I'd skip if you think itll help clear your head. You deserve to take some time for yourself. I was like you in college, always felt guilty for even thinking about skipping classes.

The one time i did skip, i skipped with a friend in the same class (who skipped frequently). Then at the next class, I was the one who got pointed out. The professor didn't even notice that my friend missed the last class. Since I was the perfect attendance kid (missed like 2 classes in all of my college career), it was even more obvious the one day i wasnt there. but it was no big deal, i made up the work and moved on.

  • Agree 100% with SBS.

  • BTW... I'm impressed by you "Perfect Attendance" kids... I was a good student/had good grades but I definitely skipped a good number of classes.  In undergrad I skipped a lot more than grad school but even in grad school with once a week classes I skipped at least a couple a semester.  I couldnt have gone every single week.  That's a lot of dedication!
  • Ditto what everyone else has said. I remember being in this same position as a grad student, and it is so true that if you don't take the time off when you need it, your body will soon make itself sick to force you to do so. Better on your own terms and doing something fun and relaxing, than later you'll be laid up in the bed with something pretty nasty. Your professors can only do so much to "punish" you, and in the end, you have to do what's right for you.

  • Well, the results are pretty overwhelming.  I'm still scared, though.  There are only a few more weeks of class...I might be able to make it.

But I read a study once that polled people who had either stayed home studying or gone to a party.  One week later, the people who stayed home studying were happier with their decision that the ones that went out.  One year later, though, the reverse was true.

I'm sort of hung up on being a perfectionist.  That's part of my problem.

  • ::Disneyland Disneyland!!!!::

    ((chanting))

I went to college in Orlando and took a mental health day with some of my best friends. (I was one of those never miss a class nerds either) We did Islands of Adventure and Citywalk and it was the best. day. ever.
