Hello NJ ladies...
I'm looking to relocate from California to NJ, and I'm trying to figure out commute times. I'll be working in Mt. Laurel and would like to live fairly close. DH is looking for work and will likely be in Secaucus or NYC (although Philly is a possibility too). So we're trying to figure out what the commute would be to North Jersey or NYC. He'd likely drive because he'll be working odd hours (2pm-midnight, noon-10pm). Is the commute bad? Does anyone do it regularly? We're also considering splitting the difference and moving to a more central location like Princeton or Plainsboro, but we'll need to rent the first year and rents seem to be a lot higher there. Wondering if a bad commute would make it worth the extra money.
Thanks so much!
Re: commute times to NYC
As Lily said, NYC is hit or miss with traffic. He could also take a NJ Transit train into north NJ or NYC from the Hamilton, NJ station (which is directly off of 295). This will go straight into NYC and parking should be fairly cheap. Here's the station's website: http://www.njtransit.com/rg/rg_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainStationLookupFrom
my husband works in NYC (park and 48th) and used to commute by train. (we live in Marlton and he would drive to hamilton station and take it right into NY penn station, then grab a cab or walk to work depending on weather). (all in about 2.5 hours depending on if he caught an express NJ transit train etc).
it was too exhausting and now we have a small apartment in NYC so he doesnt have to commute anymore. driving home from the city back to marlton (or mt laurel) after 9 pm is doable in about 1 1/2 hours (if road construction sometimes up to 2 hours).
he will also want to rent a parking spot in the city. we pay $350/month for the parking garage spot...with a small car you may be able to find one anywhere from $250-$300.
living in princeton even though it is much farther north will not save you that much time. (it will save you about 10 minutes on the train), but to get on the NJ expressway into the city it is not as direct.
another option is looking into maplewood or somewhere in north jersey, but then you will both have to commute (he will take about 1 hour on the train), and you will be driving at least 1.5 hrs down to mt laurel....and the traffic is HORRIBLE at peak hours of rush hr.
let me know if you have any questions. we have a lot of friends who commute into NYC from different cities so i could go on and on!
I think everyone else is giving good advice. I'd also suggest he look in Wilmington, Delaware, for work. There are a lot of companies headquartered there.
What does he do?
