BFing mamas

How long was it before your nipples stopped hurting?  I'm pretty sure she's latching fine because although initially it hurts (I think she bites down at first), once she's actually nursing, it doesn't hurt.  But my nips are pretty sore and sensitive otherwise.  Does it really take 4-6 weeks?  Yikes.

Re: BFing mamas

  • Yes, I'd say 4-6 weeks.  The good thing is that one day you'll realize that it doesn't hurt when she latches and then it'll be smooth sailing :)  [But I will say that once she starts teething, it's a whole different experience]
  • Mine hurt for about 4 weeks...only when he would initially latch on (for like 5 - 10 seconds) then they would be okay. I did put on nipple shields when he wasn't nursing since my shirt would rub my nips.  Keep at it....it gets so much easier!!!  I could cry when Ashton latched on and now I can barely tell he is nursing.
  • I had the HARDEST time in the beginning and would cry when Jaylee would latch on. At one point my nipples bleed, but I knew that her latch was right, just my nipples were raw from rubbing on my shirt. It will go away in a few weeks. My lasted till 3 weeks. Hope it gets better soon..
  • BFing was painful for the first few weeks and my nipples were sensitive for at least four weeks.  Every time she would latch it made my toes curl it hurt  so much.  I find that let down still hurts a little, not really painful but tingely.    Lanolin cream was my bff in the beginning, now iI use it for chapstick :)  hope it stops hurting soon!
  • mine hurt for 5-6 weeks. Soothies gel pads were life savers!! Get some asap if you don't have them and put them on after EVERY feeding!! They made me feel so much better. My toes used to curl and I would cry for her initial latch, now it's no big deal. I'm actually nursing now :) Also be sure to where breast pads and a nursing bra or sleep bra, my nipples hurt like hell when they would rub against anything!

Now once in awhile she'll bite down, I just say "NO" in a stern voice, pull her off and try again. it's 3 strikes your out, so if she bites down 3 times, she's done for an hour. It works for us and I've only hit the 3 strikes two times, usually once I say NO she stops and pulls off or she'll nurse normally.

  • Mine stopped hurting around week 3...she latches well and if she gets lazy I also make her re-latch.  But with 6 hours straight of cluster feeding during week two I got sore.

Gel Soothies work!  I got mine at Walgreen's...they're $11 but reusable and I highly recommend getting some.  It made all the difference in the world for me.

  • I think it lasted 3 weeks? Alexa had a bad latch in the beginning so my nips got cracked and scabbed over. yuck. Once that went away, I was fine. Now I can barely feel it. I am bracing for her teeth.... Eeeeek!
