My H's bday is in May and we have such a busy May with 2 weddings (one that I'm in, one that I'm going to AND planning) so I want to suprise him with a weekend getaway in early June. We talk about going to Maine, Vermont, or Canada for a nice weekend but I've never been to any of those places so I'd love some suggestions and expert opinions as I'd love to book something soon!
Re: Weekend Getaways
I've heard great things about Bar Harbor, ME. I'm hoping to go there for a long weekend for our anniversary this year.
Montreal is a doable drive from here and was awesome. I went a few years ago on a last minute trip and I loved it! There's so much to see and it's a beautiful place.
We LOVE Vermont... it's a very cool state, pretty much wherever you go. I haven't been to Burlington yet, but H has and it's one of his favorite places.
We haven't made it to Maine yet, but I've heard wonderful things about Acadia National Park. I believe there are numerous bed and breakfasts in the area.
Montreal is, indeed, an awesome city. Lots to do!
Have fun!
Ditto everyone else. I went to college in Vermont & grew up in Maine... Burlington VT is awesome... love love love it- great food, awesome location, beautiful romantic sunsets. Beware of college graduation weeks though because it is insane during that time (and there are several colleges).
Maine- I feel lame that I've never been to Boothbay but I've heard it's awesome, as well as Camden. Farther north is Bar Harbor is probably the same distance as Montreal and is absolutely gorgeous as well. Kennebunkport/ Ogunquit are both great-- we were married in Kport. There are some cute B&Bs in both areas. They are the closest to Boston.
I love going to Maine. I have family in Bangor so I visit all the time. I echo the previous posts in saying that I love Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. I've also spent many February vacations at the Samoset Resort in Rockport (http://www.samosetresort.com). The Rockport/Camden area is really nice as well. Pretty much anywhere along coastal route 1 is nice (little towns, B&B's and right on the water).
I haven't been to Vermont too much but when I drove up to Rutland I went through the town of Woodstock and thought it looked adorable!
And I just went to Montreal for NYE and I love the city. I would just advise to NOT stay at the Intercontinental; awful service.
GL!
Decide on an area first
then I can give you some recommendations! How far do you want to travel? Stowe VT is gorgeous and has some great places and is within 30 minutes of Burlington.
Maine is a huge state-- how far do you want to drive?!
this is where I wanted to stay when I thought we might go to Bar Harbor last year;

We went up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park for our anniversary last year, right around the end of May/beginning of June. It was a great little retreat, and we would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't rained most of the weekend
We stayed at a B&B called Castlemaine Inn. There are sooo many B&Bs in the area and a lot of them offer last-minute specials, even if they're unadvertised. I negotiated a great discounted last-minute rate and when we arrived they even upgraded us to the honeymoon suite!
If you're considering New Hampshire at all, we also enjoyed a weekend in North Conway. Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do plus outlet shopping
Oh, and great food!
I used to work there! I did an internship with the front office in 2004. Beautiful hotel!! I can't wait to go back. :-)
