square dancing

hello.

i am a yankee visiting your parts this weekend. my sister just moved there a few months ago.

i would like to go to a hoe down. mind you, not a boot-scooting-boogie, but more of a do-see-do, grab your partners round n round.

does this exist outside of my dreams?

i've checked out http://www.asrda.org/  but it doesnt seem like anything is going on.

any modern square dancing that you know of? i apologize if this is coming off too cliche, as i also get tired of answering where the nearest cheesesteak place is in philadelphia. but the tourists want what they want. i wants to dance.

thank you for your time and i look forward to visiting your city!

Re: square dancing

  • very similar to square dancing is contra dance or barn dance. try googling those. i know this group dances every wednesday, but i don't know about weekends.

    fun!

  • I have no idea where you can square dance (the only place I've ever seen it is at senior centers), but this post made me laugh. I hope that isn't offensive, but (as a Texan born and raised) square dancing never ever crosses my mind as something we do, so it's pretty amusing that that is what somebody thinks of.

ETA: I think its great that you want to do something like this. Makes me actually want to find a place to go, because I'm definitely into kitschy, fun stuff like that.

  • when I think of square dancing, I think of 5th grade when we used to dance in the MP (multi-purpose) room when it was raining and we couldn't have PE outside.

but this was in CA.  ;)

  • nope, didn't take it as offensive!

thanks for that link - i'll report back if i find anything while i'm there.

This!  Except we did it every year as part of PE from 1st-5th grade =).  I've never seen it done outside of a school gym though!

To the PP - depending on the dates, the rodeo may be in town (either here or in Houston).  That is always a good time and more representative of Texas!!

  • i think it's an appalachia thing, not a texas thing ;)
  • ha! i knew that music education degree would come in handy. ;) i was right:

  • We used to have a father-daughter square dance every year in Girl Scouts.  I agree with Jezca - pretty sure it's not a southern tradition.
