Need help getting started!

I live in Iowa so no planting yet (there is at least a foot of snow that needs melting and it is 7 degrees right now!) But I am hoping it is a good time to start researching.

I bought a new house last summer so I've never had a garden. I want to grow veggies - especially tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and anything else I can get to grow easily. I also want to do flowers (I'm going to work on landscaping, it was new construction so we're starting from complete scratch).

Any website or book recommendations for how to get started and how to figure out what grows well where you live? I don't want to waste a bunch of time and money on trying to grow things that will not thrive here.

Thanks!

  • You can start by googling USDA growing zones. You can enter your ZIP code and it will tell you what zone you're in. You can use that as a guide for figuring out what will work, since most web sites indicate what zones will work for what plants.

I like the low-tech option of consulting a local garden center (not Lowes or HD, a garden-only center) and getting some ideas for what will work. They often have experts who will talk to you about good choices.

    Good luck.

  • Ditto pp.

And, for your first-ever veggie garden, I would recommend sticking to only a few kinds of vegetables and a few herbs.  Otherwise, the work of the veg garden + landscaping could be really overwhelming!

If you do want some book recs, I've got several in my blog (link in sig) under the Book tag.

  • Be careful of what you plant.  For example, my parents put in mint and mustard greens forty years ago, and it's been coming back ever since - and spreading throughout the whole yard.  Make sure that anything you do plant is not an invasive species.  You'd be surprised at how many of those are actually sold in nurseries.
