roses- when and which ones to plant?

Hi ladies,

Is it too early to plant rose bushes? My daffodil and hyacinth bulbs have just started to peek through the dirt/yucky leftover snow and I'm itching to start my other gardening activities. For my fellow DC ladies *kastle?* when would you recommend planting them?

Also, I'm looking for a variety of blooms, but don't know which ones are best. Any recommendations?

Re: roses- when and which ones to plant?

  • I'm no rose-pert, but I'm thinking it's too early.  I was at a nursery over the weekend & they didn't even have them out yet.  I would *think* (someone else correct me on this...) that waiting until mid/late-April (or May) would be best.

As for kinds, I have knock-out roses.  Relatively disease & pest resistant, long bloomer, and easy to care for, but they don't come in as many colors, etc. as tea or other roses.

  • are "knock-out" roses easy to find in DC? (ie- will the nursery folks know what I'm talking about if I say I want knock-out roses?)

You can tell I'm very 101 on this stuff.....

  • Yes, they are *very* easy to find.  HD carries them even!  I've seen them in hot pink, light pink and a white color.

They are kind of like....how do it put this...the burger (as oppose to filet) of roses.  Not really fancy & kind of ubiquitous.  This doesn't bother me, but I thought I'd put it out there.  They are probably a good plant for someone that is a beginner but if you are really looking to dive into the world of roses, it's not going to be the plant for you.  If that makes sense.

You can probably google & find photos.

  • I second the knock out rose. So easy to care for and they bloom June to November for me.
