Stance on "bump" technique?

What does everyone think of posters "bumping" topics to make them come back up to the top of the board?  I've seen it on other forum websites, and while I think it's slightly annoying, there's not anything I can do.  Once someone does it twice, I almost think of it as spam and am inclined to delete, even though that would be silly!

Has anyone encountered this on their board?  It would really only affect those who sort by reply time and not OP time I guess.  Any thoughts?

Re: Stance on "bump" technique?

  • I seem to be the only one on my board that does this.  LOL.  It's usually when I want to make sure posters have seen something, without making a sticky.

It drives me insane that Sticky posts NEVER go bold, so I bump...usually with BUMP pictures.

  • I've heard of this happening on the Nest but no one on my board(s) have complained about it so far.  I think most of us have them sorted by newest post up top so this wouldn't really apply.

  • I actually haven't seen this done on either the nest or the knot thankfully.
  • I took a quick straw poll on my board, and it's 4 to 1 those who view last reply versus the old style.  It affects more people than I originally thought!

  • I sort by last reply, now, too.

Some threads annoy me when they are bumped, like the engagement ring thread that just would not die, and a newb vs. reg battle on Chit Chat.  But I recognize that some people want to talk about things even if I don't, and so I'm ok with it the way it is.

But do they literally reply with "bump" and nothing else?  That's the part that bugs me.  If you have something to add to the topic - reply by all means, even if the thread is 2 months old.  But just replying to bump the topic back to the top of the board is annoying IMO.
