Looks Like San Diego

Just got word by email that apparently DH and I are headed to San Diego.  Kind of looking forward to it aside from the distance from family.  We've both only ever lived on the east coast and I'm from a really tight family.  I think that the distance will be the hardest thing for me as it will be more of an ordeal to get home.  Not sure when the move will be...probably sometime between June and Sept.

Just finished moving us out of our house yesterday.  Did most of the work myself and am sore from head to toe...lost 2.5 lbs this week.  Closing is tomorrow.  At least we're mostly packed, lol.

Re: Looks Like San Diego

  • What a relief it's not Virginia--you made the right move by selling the house.

San Diego sounds like an adventure!

  • That's great news! You're going to love it here! Let us know when it's time to start looking for places, and Colette and I can help you with the move. I assume he'll be on a ship at the Naval Station 32nd street?
  • I'm actually not sure what his new job will entail.  When we got shafted on the NY stuff I told him to pick something that looked good to him and to just go for it.  I figure I'm gonna have to uproot anyways, the where only matters so much.  Plus we'll be trying for a family soon and we'd both like for me to be home for the pre-school stage if we can afford it...so my job comes into play a little less with this move.  I think he'll be on shore, but don't know much about what he'll be doing.  Kind of ironic as he & I usually go over stuff in detail and decide together...with him underway that just wasn't realistic if a good opportunity came up.

We'll probably be looking for a house if we can afford it.  We have a dog that is a mix of a breed that's often restricted for apts (at least in VA he is)...so our pickings for apts and such may be slim.

  • Just be aware taht the housing market here is really tough, and we're rated one of the lowest cities for disposable income. We just don't get paid enough for what things cost here! That's not to discourage you though, the city is amazing and I'm sure you'll love it.

  • I know.  Its one of my concerns with living there, I know its HCOL.  I'm not convinced we'll be able to get a house...and even less convinced I'd be able to do the SAHM thing for anything more than the FMLA.

  • As someone who live in LA, allow me to say that San Diego is awesome!  I think you can't but love it there.  It's beautiful and there are lots of fun things to do.  It has a ballet, which is more than LA can say.  And I think, like most cities, the further away you live from the fun young stuff, the cheaper the houses.  I wouldn't give up on being a SAHM yet.
  • My cousin lived there and LOVED it.  They'd moved there for her husbands residency and she didn't want to leave.  Ironically they ended up in Virginia and now I'll be headed where they were.

We'll no doubt be playing the housing and SAHM thing by ear.  Too many variables to decide this minute and the kids arrival would be at least a year out anyways.

  • I love San Diego :)

And, yes, everything everyone else has said is true. However, don't discount townhouses/condos/the like. Many of those options can be more affordable than a house and it would still be a "place of your own." Plus, the housing rental market here is pretty good -- I was lucky enough to rent a small three-bedroom house for a few years (in grad school round 1) in a wonderful neighborhood right down the street from a school.

I'm sure being far from your families will be very hard, but at least you're moving to an AWESOME place for them to visit :)
