Do you think Womens Hockey should be OUT of the Olympics?

Seeing as it is always Canada vs. US in the finals?  Or should they leave it in and raise the bar for other countries?

Discuss!

Re: Do you think Womens Hockey should be OUT of the Olympics?

  • We were having this debate at work today. I think enough isn't being said about the lengths to which Canada is attempting to help other countries train and compete at our level in women's hockey. Rome wasn't built in a day!
  • It pains me - I voted out.  And I'm a women's hockey player.  Women's hockey is not a sport that other nations can compete at.  It's been that way for over 10 years... if it hasn't improved yet, it's not going to any time soon.

  • Didn't they have to go to some lengths to get it IN the Olympics? I think it would be a pretty big blow to equality if they took it out because they couldn't develop it further in other countries.

From what I understand, the IIHF is trying to develop it in other countries. I agree with Mel... give it some time. Taking it out of the Olympics would be rather counterproductive to inspiring young women around the world to take up the sport.

  • I know our women are much better, but aren't the Olympics full of sports where other countries routinely dominate?  They aren't taken out.

I may be wrong but it seems to me men's basketball has for a long time been dominated by the Americans and it's not being taken out.  And there is usually controversy with women's gymnastics (i'm thinking of accusing other countries of entering under aged competitors) but we're not taking those out.

Not to mention have all countries always been competititve in things like baseball, men's hockey, curling, etc?  Aren't those sports that started in one country and had to gain popularity and worldwide participants?  I'm willing to admit I could be wrong since I'm not big on sport history, but I can't believe that sports that are hugely popular in just one country are instant successes when new countries first take it up.

And how does anyone expect others to get better at a sport by removing it?

Of course it also pisses me off that the sports targeted for removal always seem to the be the women's sport.

And I'm more bothered by the use of professional athletes on national teams for the Olympics then one country dominating a sport.  Whether it's baseball, basketball or hockey.  I'd rather see the participants be the people who play on their national team all season - and that is the women's hockey team.

  • I voted in..  Why should our hockey team be punished for the fact that the other teams aren't good enough??  I'm totally out of the loop on the olympics and sports this year so I didn't know this was even being discussed.  I just don't see it as fair.  Women can't play in the NHL to get a chance at a stanley cup.  This is the stanley cup for our women's team.

  • I think if they take it out because north Americans are dominate in the sport its going to create a big issue in terms of where do you draw the line?  I believe this is the first year a North American country won at Ice dancing and no one was proposing that be removed?
