NER: Makeup

I just bought new makeup today - I got 5 different eyeshadows - all Chanel. I love Chanel makeup! It is so expensive but I love it so. What makeup do you love?

Re: NER: Makeup

  • I love Benefit and Victoria's Secret Very Sexy. Benefit for powder/foundation, VS for eye makeup.
  • oooh I love Chanel makeup too. I almost never buy it, but I splurged on a lipstick that I adore.?

I just bought a lipstick quad box by YSL that I absolutely love too.?

  • I use Lancome foundation, but I also use Cover Girl blush....
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • This is something I've always wondered.  In what way is the expensive stuff definitively better?

I mostly buy neutrogena, but I also only wear mascara and tinted chapstick for the most part.  I do have an expensive foundation, Lancome I believe, got it for my wedding after a friend suckered me into doing one of the counter makeovers, so I bought it b/c it was a really good match.  I do like it better than others I've used, but I don't know if I'd buy it again (then again, I've had it for 2 years, and it's only half gone, so it's not like I really use it).  I've used the $20 mascara rather than the $5, but I couldn't tell the difference.  I always end up throwing it out anyway b/c 1 tube can last me 3 years.  It goes bad long before it gets used up.

  • I am cheap. I only buy drugstore stuff. I've had the better stuff, but I don't really see the difference.

I do have and enjoy Bare Minerals though.

My favorite beauty product, hands down, is Neutrogina's SPF 30 tinted moizterizer.

Honestly, I don't notice much of a difference at all when it comes to mascara. But I much prefer expensive lipstick because it's much smoother, moister and stays longer and doesn't feather the way that cheaper lipstick does. Kind of the same with eyeshadow - I find that expensive eyeshadow lasts longer, doesn't crease and goes on much smoother and more evenly than drugstore eyeshadow. Foundation, concealer, same kind of thing.?

I don't really notice much of a difference with things like eyeliner or powder either, so I always just buy drugstore eyeliner, powder and mascara and save my money for the other stuff.?

  • Ditto TTT. I use Cover Girl Mascara. I use Clinique Powder because they have a good color for me - I think Clinique is middle of the road. But I love to splurge on some great eye shadows and lipsticks. The expensive stuff usually holds up better and has better colors etc. Overall a much better product.

I compare Chanel Makeup to Cover Girl Makeup like I would compare Jimmy Choo Shoes to Payless Shoes or Louis Vuitton Purse to Target Purse.

Do you really need Chanel makeup or a Louis Vuitton Purse? No. But if you can afford it for certain classic pieces or great makeup then the difference is sure worth it!

  • I wear Clinique or Neutrogena. ?But I honestly never wear make up. ?My usual is Bert's Bees watermelon lip gloss, and occasional cover up/loose powder if I have any blemishes (if I'm going to a party only). ?Occasional blush, but I'm usually rosy cheeked enough to go without.

My skin is crazy dry and sensitive, so usually I don't bother. ??

  • That comparison to Jimmy Choo or Louis Vitton is what shows me I don't need expensive makeup.  I don't consider those qualitatively worth the price.  Sure, I'll spend money on nicer shoes than payless, and I'll shop elsewhere than Walmart, but designer to me =/= quality.  A vitton bag is not going to be better to the same degree it's more expensive.

I can see the lipstick thing to a degree.  Really cheap stuff is nasty.  But, I really love my neutrogena lipsheer or whatever they call it.  But, having lived in Denver, I really learned to appreciate a good moisturizer 1st.  It may not be an issue for people living elsewhere.

  • A better comparison is shampoo rather than bags or shoes. To me great makeup is a splurge like luxury shoes and purses - not a necessity but a luxury.

But the quality is usually a lot better (not always depending on the brand - sometimes you just pay more for the name!) But good makeup is usually worth more money as it lasts longer and how well it holds up and what goes into making it. Often it looks a lot better! But I intermix cheap and expensive items.

I believe in spending more money for quality products but I don't always believe in buying something for the "name."

  • The difference between the drugstore and department store makeup is the ingredients within. ?Drugstore makeup uses more fillers, so that type of makeup will tend to rub off more and irritate your skin. ?I can totally see a difference when I use the expensive makeup. ?I got a giftcard to Sephora for my birthday (YAY!) and got the Bare Minerals starter kit (love it) and some Benefits mascara. ?The drugstore mascara clumps like crazy and this just seems to go on more smoothly. ?My favorite eye shadow is clinique. ?I like the concealer by Lancome, Photogenic. ?Awesome for under my eyes. ?I don't do lipstick, so I am a Burt's girl like Bunny for that one!

  • I love makeup. Sephora is one of my favorite stores. I use more expensive makeup for my foundation (Bare Minerals), blush (Nars), mascara (Dior) and powder (Bare Minerals). But for other things (eyeliner, eyeshadow, lip gloss), I'm happy with the drugstore brands. I'm also a fan of Loreal Voluminous mascara.

  • I use mostly Aveda makeup, but I love Dior mascara. There's just something about it...
  • I love the Dior mascara.

I pretty much only use expensive make up products.  I really like Stila eyeshadows.  For eyeliner I use Clinique, the kohl eyeliners, I don't like eyeliners that you don't sharpen for some reason.  Nars Blush.

If your eyeshadow tends to crease a lot, which mine always did, I highly recommend Urban Decay eye shadow primer.  The stuff is amazing, my eyeshadow will stay creaseless all day.

Oh yeah, and I like the resilience Esste Lauder cream compact, I use it with a foundation brush, which I love!

As for lipgloss, I really like the bare minerals Buxom Lips.

  • I will have to try the Dior mascara - do they have more than one type? Which do you like?

  • Yeah, I don't think the comparison to handbags is really good either, mostly because you don't actually wear handbags. To me, expensive makeup not only looks better, it FEELS better on my face.?

    ?

I also have tried some super-expensive moisturizers (including some samples of the obscenely expensive La Prairie) but never found one that works better than my $7 drugstore Neutrogena. ?
