security systems

Does anyone have one?  Our new house has an ADT system.  I am not sure if we will continue to use it.  We will get a discount on our homeowners and it looks like fees are $30-40 a month.  Is it bothersome to have to hit a button when you come and go?  I grew up not even locking our doors and I feel safe where we are.

We had our home inspection today - it was really nice seeing the house again after all these months.  Our excitement has totally be renewed.  I think we are going to love living there.

Re: security systems

  • I don't know anything about security systems, but I'm glad to hear you got to see the house again today.  How did the inspection go?
  • The only thing I can say about living with a security system is that you get used to setting it when coming and going.  We don't have one but I lived with my aunt who has one and it was a pain at first to remember but then it became routine.

I hope your inspection went well!  I'm excited for you!

  • It went well.  The only thing the inspector found was that there are no GFCI outlets, which is no big deal, we can install them.

The decor in the house isn't as bad as I remembered.  I can totally live with the border in the kitchen until we have time to decorate.  We were both super excited when we left.  There is an antenna in crawl space above the garage, which is totally cool because we can continue our cable-free life.  I forgot there is an utility sink in the laundry/mud room.  The only sad thing is we decided that we are not taking my greenhouse because there isn't a good spot for it.  My BIL will be happy, he wants it (so it gets to stay in the family).

  • Hey Denise we have a security system...had it installed late last year.  Our monitoring service is through Vector but I think these days most of the companies are pretty comparable.  Our service is $29.99/month.  We have key fobs for our system so it's super easy to arm/disarm and you do get used to it.  I was disappointed to not get more of a discount on our homeowners policy...they tell you that you could get up to 20% off but it only ended up saving us about $20/year.  The main reason we got it was because after my parents house fire in '05, I was worried about something happening when were not home and Byron being in his crate and unable to get out but I also definitely feel safer when Brad is OOT for work or coming home late b/c of hockey or something.
