BR: kick counts

So according to the Bump, I should be doing kick counts at this stage (I say the Bump because none of my doctors have mentioned it to me - they ask if the babies are still moving a lot, I say yes, and that seems to be good enough).

The thing is...I'm not really sure how to go about doing this. First, I'm assuming I'd have to keep a separate chart for each baby? Second, how exactly do you count the kicks? I've read how to do it (make sure you feel 10 kicks in an hour, blah blah blah) but do I have the only children in the world who don't do clear kicks? They're often not movements that I'd really be able to count. It's like movemovemovemovemovemovejabjabmovejab really really quickly - I'd be very hard pressed to separate it into distinct kicks or movements in order to count "one...two...three..." (Sometimes I think they're having tap dance competitions lol.)

At an ultrasound this week, the tech even commented to me that they were some of the most active babies she'd ever seen - they simply don't.hold.still. They're constantly in motion, and I just have no idea how to track or count that. Should I even bother trying, or should I just go, "eh, as long as I'm feeling movement from both of them throughout the day, we're good"?

Re: BR: kick counts

  • This time around my doctor wanted me to do kick counts (he never mentioned it with my first pregnancy).  He told me to count any movement and that I should feel ten movements in an hour.  If I didn't, to sit down and eat and drink and then count again.  I think that as long as you're feeling movement, they're fine.
  • I don't do it and my OB hasn't told me to.  She just asks whether the baby is moving consistently, and as long as that happens, I don't worry about it.  I just wait to feel movement in the morning when I wake and at night before I sleep... and then expect to feel it on and off throughout the day.

Must be hard to count for twins!

This is pretty much what I do. They're the most active at night and in the morning, so as long as I feel them consistently at those times (and intermittently throughout the day), I figure it must be OK.

  • I think it they are that active, kick counts really are not for you. Sometimes my little guy is really active like that but then he has his lazy days and that's when I do the kick counts.
  • I never did kick counts either. I just expected to feel her and if I hadn't felt her in awhile then I'd sit and make sure she was moving. Then I'd go about my business. I never actually counted them though.
  • I asked my doctor about kick counts and she said not to worry about it. She said as long as I feel the baby moving regularly, we're good. She said to count would add unnecessary stress but that if I ever felt like I had not felt the baby in a while, I could call and come in for a check-up.

  • I don't do kick counts because the baby is super super active and believe me, he's kicking/moving more than 10 times an hour sometimes!

Heh, honestly, it's hard to say. The cartilage in my ribs has been inflamed for months from the rapid ute growth - it's been hurting like a mofo for that long, so I think any additional aches from kicking would pretty much go unnoticed. Stick out tongue
