Clicky Poll: Would you see a chiropractor if... ?

This is what happens when the board is this dead. I come up with stupid things to ask your opinion on.

So, eight years ago I was in a bad car accident. Sustained serious injuries to my lower back (L3-L4, right where it curves in above your butt). Had surgery in 2006.
At the time (shortly after the accident, and when meeting with the surgeon for a consult), I was told I should never, ever, ever go to a chiropractor again. Not that they were against chiropractic treatment, but because my injury was such that if my lower back were adjusted in anyway I would risk paralysis to my lower half.

So... for the past few weeks my neck & shoulders have been bothering me. And I keep thinking that a chiropractor would really help. I've rotated my mattress, changed my pillow, no improvement. My neck pops, on its own, several times a day. Loudly. And without me helping it. Like I turn my head & it pops. And often, right after it pops, I get a headache.

I would really like to see a chiropractor for it. I saw a chiropractor before my accident, and shortly after (until they got my MRI results), and noticed a big difference in how I felt. And since this is my neck/upper back, and not my lower back....[Poll]

I was thinking this too.  Even if it doesn't address the actual problem it would be nice!  And maybe you could get their opinion on your back issues.

  • I would not.  I've seen chiropractors and they do seem to help but I would not mess around with an injury to your spine.  DH had a spinal fusion in his neck & has permanent nerve damage and I would yell at him if he tried to go.  I've done physical therapy & traction for neck problems and it helped just as much, if not more, than a chiropractor-plus insurance was more willing to pay for PT!  So I'm not against chiropractic care but I would not go in your situation.  I'm sure a chiro and surgeon would never agree on going though!

  • I definitely would not with that kind of injury.  I'd see some type of specialist first and see what they suggest, and in the meantime get a massage or do some kind of stretching, maybe heat or ice.  Also if you told the chiro that before they adjusted you they probably would refuse.  That's not really an injury to mess or take a chance with.
