Ladycomp?

I'm wondering if anyone has used the Ladycomp or similar device for nfp? My bf and I have been thinking about buying it for the past year or so, but I'm worried that we'll spend $500 on something that is unreliable. Also, I have been receiving my tri-cyclen lo for free through my workplace.

However, I have been on the pill for ~6 years and I am sick of it! My bf and I have been together for ~4.5 years and would like to get married either next spring or the spring after that, in 2012 (we both really like this season). Also, we would like to have our children soon after we are married. While discussing buying the Ladycomp last night (again), bf mentioned that while it would not be ideal for us to get pregnant in the next six months, after that it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing (as I will also be receiving my degree next spring, so I would have no trouble graduating before having the child). Even still, I want us both to be able to trust in the method of birth control we decide to use.

Has anyone found the Ladycomp to be reliable? Is it easy to use?

 TIA for your thoughts!!

*Oh, and we would use condoms but I often have bad reactions to them...

Re: Ladycomp?

  • I am not sure about the reliability of Ladycomp, but you don't need to spend $500 to use NFP effectively. I've seen it mentioned several times on here already so you may have already seen it, but if you just read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and use the accompanying PC software and chart a few cycles before relying on it, you should be fine. Always use your best judgment as well, don't just blindly follow what the program says.

  • Ditto PP. I've never heard of Ladycomp, but I know tons of people who use NFP (all with no surprises). They either read TCOYF or took a CCL class and they were good to go.

  • Thank you both! I will pick up Taking Charge of Your Fertility at the bookstore this week and read through it. I am worried about the time and work (oh geez, this sounds bad!) that I would put into charting... I am in the final push of my program at school, I always have a lot of schoolwork to do, and I work two jobs. I am constantly exhausted. I'm sure that it would only take a few minutes each day though, so I will definitely consider it.

As far as my bf and I can tell, the Ladycomp is a thermometer that is also computerized. It will take your temperature, and tell you if you should not have sex/can have sex with caution (use a backup method if you can)/can have sex. It will record when you are ovulating, etc., will tell you when you are pregnant, and can even tell you when you are at risk of miscarriage (according to their website). It seems like it would be "the easy way" to chart, as the device charts for you (and you can order a printout of your chart if you like too).

Before we decide, we'll read TCOYF for sure. Thanks so much!

  • Charting literally takes a minute or so each morning. It definitely would not be worth it to me to pay $500/year to save those couple of minutes. The only adjustment for me was setting an alarm 15 minutes before I normally do to take my temp. Then I hit snooze and lay around for a few minutes before getting up. On weekends I just go back to sleep. The bbt thermometers store the temp so you don't have to worry about noting it right away.

The software will track your signs after you take 30 seconds to plug in your temp/record CM and once you've read the book and done a couple cycles you'll have a clear indication of when you're getting into a potentially dangerous area and when you're all clear.

     GL!
