we went in for macy's annual vet appointment and she tested positive for heartworm. WTF? we give her preventative every month. as if all the past surgeries/issues from adopting her weren't enough now we need to find $1k to treat it and some how keep her confined for 30-60 days?! the vet thinks she probably got bit when she was a stray but that the test the shelter did was timed just right that it didn't give a positive yet.
ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!! we didn't see the primary vet today who we prefer to see, so i'm going to call back next week and talk to him. *sigh*

Are you kidding?! That is absolutely horrible, I'm so sorry
I hope, hope, hope the primary vet has better news for you. Poor Macy! And your poor bank account.
If it does come back positive, maybe talk to the people you adopted her from. It'd be a very long shot since you probably can't prove you've given her the heart worm medicine. However, it'd be worth a shot to see if they'd even share the costs with you.
Good luck!
Ditto checking about cost share with the place you adopted her from.
Could be a false positive and def talk to the regular vet, if for nothing else peace of mind to hear the news from someone you have a relationship with.
They test my dog annually, but he got a false positive last time we were there. Any time they get a positive - they run it again just to be sure... and it ended up beign a faulty test strip. whew.
My dog growing up had heardworms and it's a very sad, painful recovery -- but our dog pulled through and continued on through his life like a champ.
I'll really be thinking about Macy and I'm hopeful you can get a second opinion asap and get her into great health again very very soon!

hmmm they didn't say anything about running it twice... one of the questions i have for next week.
Awww I'm so sorry to hear that about Macy! Rolo was heart worm positive before we adopted him and we had to wait for him to finish his treatment before he could come home with us.
If you have any questions about care and such during heart worm treatment just let me know... all of the fosters that I have taken care of with HOTLR have been heart worm positive and we've had them through the recovery period. It is easier than you think to keep them calm and relaxed... esp. right after treatment... they can be very sore and tired.

It can take up to 6 months for a positive result after initial infection.
The process sounds really daunting, but it's very doable and has a high success rate with little to no residual damage--especially with a dog with a new infection (6 months to a year as opposed to years of HW infection). Is Macy crate trained? When we treated our Sadie (a rescue with an unexpected HW result), we crated her anytime we were gone, or when she was getting too active. The first 2 weeks, they feel so lousy from the treatment that keeping them quiet isn't too tough. =(
I would also talk to your vet about a payment plan to help alleviate some of the immediate cost.
Some vets will try a treatment that involves higher dosages of preventative to kill off the HWs...Macy might be a candidate sinces she's been on preventative for a year. Worth asking!
