Areas to Live in Dallas

Hello Ladies!

I am from Houston and DH might be moving with his company to Dallas.  We just moved to Texas 4 years ago from the east coast.  I've never been to Dallas and we don't know anything about neighborhoods and areas to live. Could you please give me some type of direction as to where the nicer areas to live in are?  We don't have any children right now, but will start a family in the next few years so we would want an area with good schools.  Thanks so much!!

Re: Areas to Live in Dallas

  • I am partial to the Plano/Frisco area.  :)  How far of a commute are you wanting to have?  That would help with suggestions within your radius.
  • Dallas & it's suburbs are pretty spread out.  Where exactly will DH's new job be?

Ditto!  I am also new to the area but I love the Plano/Frisco area.  We do not have kids yet but all the schools (elementry, middle and high) we are zoned to from our home are exemplary as are most in Plano/Frisco

  • To be honest, he's not exactly sure yet.  This isn't going to be for another year, year and a half.  They haven't broken ground on the new warehouse yet and he's not exactly sure where it's going to be.  It's all still tentative.  It's a situation where he can choose to move if he would like or stay in Houston.  We don't love Houston so we are thinking this might be a good opportunity to get out of this area:)  Those of you that have been to both places, what do you think the advantages/disadvantages of living in Dallas over Houston are?
  • I agree with the others. You're really going to want to know where he'll be located before you really pick a place to live. Unless you're cool with a 1-2 hour commute :(

Greatschools.net is a good resource for schools in the area.

  • PP's are spot on about knowing where you'll be working first. You don't want to have a ridiculous commute every day. LOVE Plano/Frisco though.

As for the Dallas v. Houston thing, I prefer Dallas, but I've always lived here.  We still have traffic, but I don't feel like it's as bad. We looked at moving to Houston, but I felt like we either had to pay ridiculous prices to live close to downtown, or drive an hour to and from work every day. I like that in Dallas you can have a reasonable commute and still pay a reasonable price for your home/apartment. All I know is that I have friends in Houston, and every time we visit, I'm thankful I don't live there. Not really sure why!

  • We live closer to the airport (so if you travel a lot its helpful) in Southlake and LOVE it.  All the neighboring cities are great also Keller, Colleyville.
  • I have lived in the Dallas area most of my life and I would recommend Coppell.  It is surrounded by bigger towns but it still has a smaller community feel.  There are only 36,000 people living in the community so it still only has one high school and there is not much room for more growth so hopefully it will remain that way.  And it is only about 10 minutes to the DFW airport.  The Plano/Frisco area is nice as well but much larger.  I lost count of how many High Schools Plano has and Frisco is the fastest growing community in North Texas.  I grew up in Plano and I enjoyed living there but I like the smaller feel of Coppell.  Good luck narrowing it down.

  • I also moved here from the east coast 5 years ago. I am very partial to Coppell & Valley Ranch (Irving). It is such a centralized location because you can be anywhere in the Dallas Metroplex in 15 min.  Also the Coppell school district is excellent. I rented in Valley Ranch for a few years and bought in Coppell. I LOVE Coppell so I wouldn't even consider living anywhere else in the metroplex. Good Luck!
  • We're in Richardson which is nice because it's a quick drive anywhere but we really wish we'd gone somewhere further west, as getting to Fort Worth takes forever.  We looked at Plano, but honestly, I think it's really far and the traffic is ridiculous in rush hour.  Personally, I will never live past the Bush on the north side, and if I had to choose again, not past the Dallas Tollway to the east.  Addison would be great if you want to be close to Dallas.  We have a lot of friends in Irving/Lewisville/Carrollton and they like it a lot.  Schools are great too.  We'll probably go there next.
  • I grew up near Houston and now live in Dallas.  I definitely prefer Dallas!  I just think the people are friendlier, the weather is better (not quite as hot and humid here), and it's easy to get around.

My husband and I live in Dallas, but definitely want to move out of the city when we have kids.  I know you can get an awesome house for the price if you go way out, like Royce City.  Just depends how far you want to commute.
