we went the cheap route and went to Sears. I figured we didn't have much to loose (if they didn't turn out we would wouldn't have ordered any and I think in that case would have only had to pay $15 for the sitting fee). Hiring a photog wasn't in the budget...
We are happy with how they turned out - we got some great ones to use for birth announcements and ordered some prints for family. For $150 total we got a package that included 20 sheets of photos as well as the cd with release of all images so we can use them for announcements and print more later if needed. The "package" was cheaper than just buying the CD so the prints were a total bonus.
Ordered a large one of this one for our living room:

Super cute! I never thought of Sears...good idea for a 'every few months photo shoot since they are not so expensive.
Jack is adorable!

He did great, although he's a pretty calm, alert baby all the time. They gave us plenty of time to change outfits and time to stop and nurse or cudle just to make sure he stayed calm which really helped. They had a heater for the room so he stayed warm so it really was just like any other day - if anything he loved all the diaper only naked time
