I need a new veterinarian

I hate my current one.  The doc I loved at this particular office recently retired and I am now stuck with a girl who is my same age that is dumb as a rock (or just really new and insecure in her role).

Granted, I worked in a vet clinic for a loooong time and now work in the medical industry, so I probably know more than the general public.  A few visits ago, I took my female in for a stomach bug which was causing diarrhea...that's it.  She proceeded to tell me she would give her an anti-emetic.  "Umm, why? She hasn't thrown up once." I ask her.  She responds "Well, I guess it's here nor there.  We can skip that if you want."  Fail #1.  Took my female back in a few weeks ago with some serious (and scary) symptoms.  Not drinking, lethargic, etc.  She's really old so I was thinking doom and gloom, and she only reinforced all my concerns immediately.  After $1000 in labwork, x-rays, etc, she proceeds to tell me the fecal float was positive for some parasites and an antibiotic will clear it right up.  WTF???  Why did you not START with that?  I had no idea she hadn't already confirmed that was negative before she started telling it could be life threatening issues and scaring the cr*p out of me and my wallet!  Fail #2.  Final straw was just about a week ago.  My female also has hypothyroidism which I have tested every 6 months or so to make sure her dosage is correct.  I get a call from this vet saying she's on the low side of normal but at the highest dosage, so she needs me to bring her in for some blood testing to confirm she has Cushing's.  So I ask "She wouldn't have any clinical symptoms of Cushing's?"  She says "Yeah, she would."  Me "Well, do you want to tell me what they are?"  She runs through this list and all my answers are "no".  Are you kidding me?  Fail #3.  I will never go back there ever again.

Wow, that was a ridiculous rant that you don't need to read, but if you've made it this far, you can tell a. I have a very old dog who requires a lot of care and b. I hate my new vet.  Plus, they're bloody expensive!  Can anyone recommend your vet that you LOVE?  I live in NW Austin, but honestly, I'll be willing to drive anywhere if they are worth it.  Geez, sorry this is so long!

  • My parents go to Round Rock Animal Hospital, and I love Dr. Hocher.  His partner's name is Dr. Steinbeck.  I really like them both, and I've never had issues with their staff.  They even knew what Wellness was, ha.

  • We love Dr Drake at Drake Pet Hospital.  He's in RR off Louis Henna.

  • We love our vet.  Dr. Shroeder at Milwood Veterinary Clinic.  It's off of Amherst and Adelphi but the closest major roads are Parmer and Mopac.

ETA: There are two docs thare and the other is good too, we just see Dr. S more often.

  • I go to Dr. Baugh at Great Oaks Animal Hospital (in Round Rock off of great oaks and 620).  She's really great - has good "bedside" manner, totally took care of my dog through her bladder surgery, and the facilities are really nice, bright, and clean.
  • Dr. Buenger at NorthWest Veterinary Hospital.  I used to work for him and love the practice.  I would rec. him to anyone. :)

  • I do not have a recommendation for you, but a please DO not go to!

Do not use West Lynn Vet Clinic. The doctor there is awful and manhandles the animals. He had his license revoked a couple of years ago and is back in business.

    Thanks!

  • I second Dr. Schroeder at Milwood Vet. Clinic. We took our dog there when we lived in Milwood and have never had a bad experience.
  • I second Dr Buenger at Northwest Veterinary Hospital on Dry Creek/2222.  Just took my cat there for the first time and I loved them!  They have some great reviews online too.
  • I drive a good 30 minutes (from Pflugerville) to take my guys to 4 paws at 4 points at 620/2222.  Love the techs, love the staff, love the doctors.
  • We take our two dogs to Premier Animal Hospital in Cedar Park and we love them, we have seen several of the vets there and they have all been wonderful and very knowledgable.  They always call a day or two after an appointment to check on the dogs and make sure everything is going well, we really like them.  I chose them because I read a ton of great reviews about them when I was reasearching vets near Cedar Park.  Good luck on your search, sounds like you have a lot of great choices.
  • I completely second the vote for Dr. Baugh at Great Oaks Animal Clinic!! She's wonderful and amazing!! She took lots of care with us and our pup when we were trying to figure out his allergies! When we adopted Beauregard the lady from Austin Pets Alive! was very persistent that we take him to LB (Dr. Baugh's nickname). He had really bad scabies when we got him and needed lots of care. Well, Dr. Baugh made him feel so at home and comfortable that he NEVER fights going to the vet.

The clinic there is also great!! We have (on a number of occasions) had to get Beau in very quickly to a vet......for awhile he had an afinity for remote controls.....anyways, they were willing to stay around until we could get there, and they NEVER make you feel like they are trying to rush you through......

now only if there was a human doctor that made you feel so comfortable!! :)

  • Thanks everyone!  This gives me a great jumping off point!
  • I'm not sure where you are located and there are a ton of recs already but I thought I'd throw mine in there too. Animal Wellness Hospital is in Normans Crossing (between hutto & taylor.) I will forever love Dr. Boehm. She has been our vet for a few years now. She been there for the ups and the downs. She came to our house when we had to put our dog down. When she was building her new location she would come to our house for check ups, she would come pick up our animals if they needed surgery or to be fixed. One Friday night (around 8pm) she met me at her office to put stiches in my dogs foot. I absolutely love her and could never say enough great things about her. I just hope I can find a pedi as good as her. LOL!

Dr. Daigle and the crew ROCK!!! They are awesome.  I followed Dr. Daigle from another clinic and would not take my children anywhere else.  One day, we had to call the aftercall number because our youngest boxer opened her surgery site.  He would have met us up there but he had just had surgery.  Brittany, one of the awesome vet techs, left a party and met us up there.  Ali didnt whine or whimper while she was stapled so that she could make it through the night.  All my dogs LOVE Dr. Daigle. They pull me to go inside.
