Great midwestern getaway??

Hey Ladies!

I'm hoping to surprise DH with a vacation for our anniversary/just because you're awesome Wink  He is my hero, and does so much for me that I want to take him away for a few days.  We live in Indianapolis, and since our anni is the end of March, it's right smack dab in the middle of Spring Break Sad  So.......probably needs to be within driving distance.  I've been looking at flights and it seems like anywhere I look, the prices are double the normal price...and I'm really trying to do this on the cheap.

We generally like smaller towns, or small-town feel, where we can relax for a few days.  Does anyone have any suggestions???  We normally go to Nashville, TN for short vacays, but I really wanted to do something different...just for him!  But, I'm at a loss...everywhere I think of is either a REALLY long drive, or could possibly still be under snow at that time Sad  Anyone have ideas of small towns or areas that I'm not thinking of that will be nice at the end of March/beginning of April????

Thanks girls!!!

  • I thought about Mackinac Island, but that might be too far. In MI there is also Traverse City which I've heard is beautiful.

Not necessarily mid-west, but the Finger Lakes in New York are beautiful and I think there are about 9 hours away (not too close, but not too far).

  • What about a cozy lodge in Wisconsin?  Or how far is Arkansas to drive to the mountains?
  • Not sure how long you're willing to drive, but you could check out the Hocking Hills area in southeastern Ohio.  It would be about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive for you.  My DH and I stayed at a wonderful Scottish inn, Glen Laurel, that was amazing!  It is a bit pricey, but so worth it.  The food there is out of this world!  If you want to keep it a little less expensive, you could always rent a little cabin.  HTH!
  • DH and I went to Hocking Hills (in OH) in December. It was awesome! We had a cabin w hot tub, kitchen where we cooked meals together, a cozy fireplace, and lots of cool natural sites around. There are awesome caves and hiking nearby. It is really beautiful. We stayed at www.valleyviewcabins.com in the Kennedy.

Ha ha!  Great minds do think alike!  Big Smile

  • I was also going to say hocking hills.  There is this really cool castle called Ravenwood. www.ravenwoodcastle.com  It's like a little medieval town.  I'm not sure how much it is, but it's an alternative for staying in a cabin.

  • Thanks for all of the info, ladies.....definitely going to check out all of your suggestions!!!
  • I live in Traverse City and it's a popular tourist destination, but more so in the summer, unless you are into winter sports! We just had a comedy Festival and have a huge film fest here in the summer, but not much happening in March (that's why we are escaping to someplace warm!). Mackinaw Island is shut down this time of year, but also a GREAT place to visit in the summer!

For a small town get-away in March I would recommend Ashville, NC :)

  • Seraphina--

As I'm looking at all of these options, I'm checking out Asheville, NC.  I'm trying to compare prices of places/things, etc.  Where is the best part of town to stay (close to attractions, etc)?

  • My aunt is from there so I'll shoot her an email and ask! I'll let you know when I hear back from her :)
