8.8 Earthquake in Chile and Tsunami warnings
Whoa guys....not good.
Huge earth quake in Chile that happened just off their coast which has created some Tsunamis there. They are saying that this is 1000x stronger than what happened in Haiti. The entire Pacific region is in a Tsunami warning including the most direct Hawaii. California coasts may be getting some larger waves as well.
Check out cnn.com for updates. They seem to to be the only news station on tv keeping up with it as well.
Took 2 years & 8 months to make our baby!

Re: 8.8 Earthquake in Chile and Tsunami warnings
There are some photos from 1960 of a similar national weather disaster.
It is hard to beleive that an earthquake can cause water to make that far across the world!
Crazy stuff!
The joys of teaching!
How about that for timing - we just talked about tsunamis in my oceanography class this week. It's not actually the shaking that causes the wave. It's the movement of the ocean floor when the fault ruptures and causes the earthquake. Sometimes the seafloor moves upward a couple meters and that moves all the water too.

2010 Highlights
9/26 Adirondack Marathon 5:11:37 (major knee pain, but hey, I finished!)
2011 Races and Results
5/29 Buffalo Marathon (5:25 - not pretty, just trying not to get heatstroke!)
9/25 Adirondack Marathon (take 2!)
One of these days I'll have a good marathon!
Each number of the Richter scale is 10 times worse than the number below so a 6.0 is 100 times worse than a 4.0 earthquake (10 times 10). Tsunami's are caused by underwater earthquakes.
I have to teach this topic later this year. Sad to say that I'll have some real life examples the kids can relate to.

I heard on the news that Hawaii was missed but they are now thinking a tsunami may hit Japan.
Also, smaller earthquakes are happening here. There have been numerous earthquakes near where my sister lives in upstate NY that have been 2's on the Richter scale. The only reason tehy are not larger is because they are deep within the earth. On the bright side, we aren't on a fault line like Chile or Haiti is. Chile is on a convergent boundary called the Peru-Chile Trench between the South American plate and the Nazca plate. Haiti is on the Caribbean plate, which is pretty small and borders 3 other plates.
I love having another scientist on here.
There's no reason to worry about having two big quakes happen. The Earth functions on its own time scale and this is all normal. Sometimes you have more earthquakes, sometimes there are fewer.
And, like Dar said, we do get earthquakes here, but they are smaller since we are not on a plate boundary. Chile and Haiti are both on convergent plate boundaries (subduction zones), which routinely create the largest and most destructive earthquakes (as opposed to other types of plate boundaries).
You can still have intraplate earthquakes (those away from plate boundaries), however, they tend to be smaller. There are exceptions - the New Madrid area in Missouri is the location of a failed rift (where the continent tried to break apart several million years ago) and is a weaker spot within the North American plate. This area, even though it is away from any plate boundary, can sometimes experience larger quakes, due to it's history as a failed rift. New York is not this type of location.
